At least it's only going to FEEL like that and not ACTUALLY be -74. That would be even more awful. Nice 37 degress here and it's supposed to drop tomorrow night to those cold temps - battened down all the hatches tonight and put out feed and hay bales for everyone. Hoping we can pull through and not have it be too miserable. Gotta love Northern, WI.

It was sunny and 48 when I rode my last horse this afternoon.  Now it's windy and 4 degrees. Will probably not even get above 0 tomorrow.

Yesterday was so nice! It was 38 I think? Snow was melting.. perfect! Today it was like 18 but the wind had started to pick up and now its dropping fast and the wind is getting worse. Right now its 3 with real feel at -16. I believe air temp tomorrow is -28. I agree with whoever said after -15 cold is cold...

It sure didn't feel nearly as cold as what they were saying it was suposed to. Don't get me wrong, you walk out the door and immediately become a mouth breather because your nostrils are stuck together but it wasn't as windy out so it didn't hurt your face as much.

It might have made the 60s here in MS today but I know it made the 50's. Mud everywhere. The mud has only gotten crunchy here twice. I sometimes look forward to it just to not have to wear rubber boots to go feed the horses. On the other hand I have plenty of hay left....

Yeah they manage to do fine, the few garter snakes we have go down below the frost line, bears and skunks hibernate, I feel for the deer, could care less about the coyotes and wolves. Im sure some do perish - strong survive, the weak die. I know a lot of people who dont put their horses up or have blankets, mine I put in the barn on cold nights like this. Right now they are outside, I think its -15? They are just fine.. they were out running around soon as I let them out of the barn.

i live 2 hours north of hallock nd, and this has been 1 of the colder winters we have had in a while, avg temp for the week is -40C till friday and then it will warm so it can snow, seems the only time it warms up is to snow, that being said we also have warm summer, where we will have a month at 30C, so i like to think u get the best of both worlds, oh and we dont normally blanket our horses, they have a round bale and shelters if they need, one starts to shiver we will bring them inside to warm up

My parents friends lived and teached in Hallock many years ago, my dad still deer and duck hunts in Lake Bronson. I agree its been pretty cold this winter so far, usually this is weather typical of Jan and Feb, not December.

For the wild animals it can be harsh for them IF access to food is limited due to the amount of snow.....we have a few piles of silage and grain in fields around us so the deer & moose have a buffet basically (which isn't good for the farmer)  GRANTED I'm not in the -72 zone BUT I'm still in a part that gets MIGHTY cold!

But overall animals can survive given the right resources to keep their energy (body heat) up....horses and cows get lots of extra food when it turns COLD, we have only gotten down to -43 (including wind) so far this winter....but it's not over...

In all honesty I don't worry as much about the harsh winters as I do as the drastic heat and humidity in the summer along with them fighting flies and mosquitos.  During some of the heat waves the feedlots and ranchers lose a lot of animals whereas you seldom hear about losing any animals in the winter unless its a freak blizzard like western SD had in October.
