We have some good friends that have a very well bred mare. They bred her to a nice solid proven stud. Last year she fold two dead twins at 7 months. The stud owner bred her back. She bred back and was due Feb. 15 2014. This week she lost/delivered the foal...it was dead when they found everytying so dont know if it was born dead or a premie...???During our conversations I did ask what her feed she was on wondering about proteins..fats...stuff. They told me she was just on grass. But they do get culled food from the farm..corn..green beans..lettuce etc....(This is Florida) they feed free range in the pasture with the cows. No horse feed and no hayThey said she was fat and looked really good. She did start producing milk which would have had me at the vet immediately. But I dont know if it was wax or colostrum or actually milk.I know horsesnin large pastures and good grass and forrage deliver foals. Would this feeding program have caused this?If not the feeding program, if a mwre has lost two pregnancies...what is the likelyhood of her carrying a foal to term?

It would have really benefitted them and the mare to have the foal necropsied and placenta evaluated.  At this point, I would have a uterine culture and biopsy and go over everything she could possibly be eating with a good repro vet.  The short answer is 'yes' something she was eating caused this miscarriage.  The long answer is it could be anything . . . the forage she is on, uterine disease or infection, hormone imbalance, damage or weakness in her reproductive tract.  It sounds like they need to find a good repro vet and list every detail they can about her pregnancy, her diet, and every detail they can remember preceding the miscarriage.  A twin pregnancy is asking for premature delivery or miscarriage, so the fact that was a twin pregnancy is the most glaring reason for her miscarrying last season.

Thats almost exactally what I told them. I was shocked about the feed program. We have a mare due in March and she is fed 2xs a day had excellent grass and added hay. Also minerals and suppliments. I feel sick for them but tyis mare is so so nice. Hopefully they will get her flushed and cultered....I would have done a nicropsy also. I am not a breeder...never have been. This is only my second adventure in this game. I just feel so bad for them and do t want to tell them tyings in a way that sounds prechey...but I would like to help them.

Any of the culled foods off the farm that you mentioned could very easily had some kind of mold, soured, or pathogen that caused both abortions ... and being in Florida there are many things that live in the warm waters that will create problems in horses and cattle .....>>>>>>>>>>could be as simple as lack of minerals and vitamins because sand has no value of growing anything without fertilizing it to give the grasses food to grow on ................>>>> and again she may be a mare that will never carry to term ...

You cannot solve their problem for them ... they already know that feeding "sloppy leftovers" is not good for a horses sensitive digestive system since they can neither burp or puke ... everything has to go out the back in ... .... just simple grass cuttings from your yard can ferment into a mess in a few hours and colic or kill your horses ...

What concerns me is the lack of attention of everyone to the ingredients in the high priced, heavily marketed feeds everyone feeds their horses ...... just try to find a simple grain in their ingredients .... all kinds of trash and waste from human food production is all I can see anymore ... prove me wrong by scanning and showing your feed ingredients on the tear off label sewn into the bottom of the sack ..

That is why I put my entire group on simple back to basic grain feeds like rolled steam oats, alfalfa, some corn and good minerals like ADM GroStrong minerals ... it is easy to formulate a good 14% feed out of these 3 grains/fibers that are the benchmark analysis used by feed companies to sell their sacks full of trashy waste products at huge profits ...

SORRY FOR THEIR LOSS ..

iActually...thanks for the post. Im still a little in shock about the feed. I also agree on the feed issues. I am sure the feed thing has been the major cotributor to this last loss. About the time first loss I found out about the veggis from the farm. They had a horse get sick and I told them thats nit a good idea because of mold and no stable balance to the diet. I believe the other mare foundered very mild but not diagnosed...she has not been the same since. Im kind of angry and frustraited. And I feel bad for the girl and the mare.

Was she bred to the same stallion both times?

I had a friend that stood a paint stallion, and she would breed this fancy bay overo mare to him. She tried 3 years in a row, failed to carry to term and the foal was born dead all three times. They did have the placenta tested and a bunch of numerous other things. Something with the combination of both that mare and that stallions genetics were "incompatible", if you would, and this is actually what was causing the mare to give birth to a dead foal.

We don't have them any more, but for years we bred our broodmares.  They were halter broke at best.  They were pasture bred, and lived on the range and on pasture all their lives.  They usually got grain the winter for something extra.  Other than that--nada.  And they've had many nice, healthy babies over the years.   The extra veggies they feed.....that's kind of weird.

Well, first the aborted twins doesn't surprise me. They should have had her checked and pinched one off.
And now with second abortion late, it sounds to be like they may have EHV.
And like someone else said, test the placenta and uterus. Odds are it is not from what she is eating.
