Theoretically, if you were to choose between core strengthening (ie situps, pushups, weights, etc) and running, solely for the purposes of being a better rider, which would you choose and why?

ONLY ONE...

I've always been told the muscles you use riding will not be the same ones you use "working out"

Honestly, I would probably run and just ride a lot in 2 point for my core strenghtening workout. I had abs of steel riding jumpers.... not no more! hahaha

Also i need the endurance/wind more than I need strength, personally

Core.

But I hate to run.

I'm starting a 10wk 6/day wk kicking boxing and strength training class next week. Ends just before my season starts. Excited to see the difference

I should add I don't work out and don't have much knowledge about it

I used to run but have not in a long time.

This is all in theory.  Just curious to see what everyone would think would be more beneficial...

I'd choose running, because that's what I do currently and have seen great results. I'm no expert, but I figured with all of the unloading feed and hay, saddling/unsaddling,  and just helping hubby around the ranch, I get enough "weight" training. :)

I would choose core strengthening.

Core.  And lots of stretching for flexibility.  You might not be working the exact core muscles used in riding, but you'll help your balance more with core work.  And working on flexibility will keep injuries down in any unexpected fast moves your horse makes.

You need all three: strength, cardio, and flexibility! Leave out any portion, well your doomed if you sit in the saddle of a Ferrari.

This is interesting. Thanks for the responses!

uno-there is a few reasons why I said only ONE.  I understand philosophically you need them all but this was in theory.

I am one of the few who can say I literally do not have the time to do all of this (if I was to choose to work out).  I would have to either lose sleep or not work as many horses when I get home.  I am literally up before 6am and I do not stop until 9:30 at night when I climb into bed and wind down.  There is no watching TV or taking a break in my life unless I am forced.  I don't even have a lunch break to work out on as I am doing things during that time everyday.

BUT, I have toyed with getting less than 8 hours of sleep that I have done my whole life and doing something.  As tired as I am right now from this week it ain't happening anytime soon...

I hate running as much if not more than the next guy, but you already know that S&T, LOL!!! That being said, that is why I chose to run. In running you use your core and you get the added benefit of weight management to a degree.

I know we have talked about that and I have been told by hard core runners of that.  Really, if I was to try and go down that path,  running would be easier just because I could do it while I was traveling and I know I am going to be traveling a lot this year.

If I chose running it would be for weight loss only. Even when I ran every day i never noticed a big improvement in core. To me, core is more important to running than poundage so I choose core.

My yoga DVDs have been murderous on me, but I'm so happy with how I feel! I still have a very long ways to go with my riding, but I really feel that yoga has been super beneficial for my strength and timing.

Personally if only had one option it would be a treadmill. You can use it to do more than running. Put the incline up and do lunges, leave it up and walk backwards, at a slow pace. You can use the machine for many things, just have to think outside the box.

Core, I try to lift weights as well as elliptical and treadmill running atleast 3-5 days a week. I am starting Jamie Eason's LiveFit 12 week program, I love being strong, and I kind of let myself get away from all that and gained a bit of weight, so I am now on the track to getting strong and fit.

I always go by the rule, 'To be in shape for riding yoy have to ride'. Now if someone needs to lose weight I'd run along with ride. Kinda killing two birds with one stone.
