I never have vaccinated for strangles but just wondering if i should...i have a mare that will foal in spring and some other geldings they are all older and have never had it to my knowledge. Ive heard that sometimes they can have a bad reaction to the vaccine if theyve already built up their own immunity. Your thoughts?

I typically don't
We are very careful about nose to nose contact and or sharing/public water buckets and what not.
Have never had any problems with it

My vet doesn't recommend it, as more horses die from the vaccine then from the disease.

I don't, I've read too many bad side effects from it, and my horse isn't a youngster. My horse also isn't among other horses usually more than twice a month in the competition season, so I see no need.

My horses were never vaccinated for it until I started having to board them in 2010. They are 11, 17-ish, 21, and 27.
(The 27 year old was put down last summer, but had been vaccinated in the spring.
) I was told that the 17-ish year old had strangles as a youngster, but I don't know how old they meant by youngster. I've never had a problem with any of them.

We had a broodmare that got strangles at a big farm bring it home. We had vaccinated everything but it went through the whole barn anyway. I wouldn't bother with the vaccine.

We gave the intra nasal one to my horse when I was a kid. Then he developed a mild case of it after one of the vaccines. The vet
(old cow vet
) told me it wasn't strangles but an upper resp infection. Needless to say he was incorrect. After we got him over it we never gave it again. Many years and a ton of horses later we still don't give it and our current vet recommends against it. It's one vaccine we do not require when we have clients drop off horses.

I have always vaccinated for strangles for the last 20 years. My vet uses the IM and have never had a reaction. I was at a barn that strangles went thru on 2 different occasions and my horses were directly exposed and never got sick.
