I think there are a lot more riders holding back their horses than there are horses holding back their riders. Most people will not push past their comfort zone to learn to ride full out to the horses potential. Young people are fearless and ride more to the horses potential. As we get older I think we start to worry about getting hurt in life and just don't push past that comfort zone.
Ain't this the truth!! I used to break colts and ride the ones that were KNOWN to be rank. Why? Just because I COULD, I guess.
(well, that and there's lots of cash in it if you are a "junior" rider and can send an unruly horse around a jump course so the owner can send it off to the next person for their "junior hunter over fences."
) Now that mommy and daddy don't pay the bills...it's on to barrel racing.
And now that I am 34 and 60 lbs heavier...the ground hurts! One bad fall and I'm not so sure about riding that rocket around 3 barrels. We JUST broke into the high 17's. My poor mare just plods along and goes as fast as I tell her to, which could be much faster if I wasn't so concerned. And I shouldn't be concerned...if I break my neck out there and die...fine. If I break my neck out there and am stuck being paralyzed...THAT worries me.

I'm in the "too scared to ride balls to the wall" boat. I currently do, and hopefully always will, work labor intensive jobs for a living. I'm terrified of hurting myself so badly that I have to spend the rest of my life sitting at a desk.
My body is too important to me, and if I get injured, I can't pay my bills. It makes ya think!
