Perky Gal Location: On a paint horse...	This may be a simple question but to be honest I have never had to worry about so I really dont know...I use an Ed Wright bit that has the little hooks for the chain chin strap. My mare is ultra sensitive to the chin strap, even when the reins are sitting on her neck and Im not touching her face. I covered it with vet wrap but then it gets sticky and catches hair. Im leary of just tying rawhide as Im thinking (may be wrong!) that she may be more sensitive since its so thin. Another problem I have is the extra chain hanging down, the links will come up and get caught on the hook. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

I Want a "MAN" Posts: 3610 Location: MD	I like flat leather chin straps. I would think rawhide would be pretty hard if not harder than a flat chain. Just my opinion of course :)

Winner winner chicken dinner Posts: 2047 Location: California	I'm not sure on the Ed Wright bit, but I made a leather chin strap work on my Little S Hackamore. I just went to the hardware store and found some small rings to work on the attachment. It was pretty easy. Good luck!

The rawhide would be harder and stiffer. Are find you a really thin and long peice of leather and use it for the curb strap, I have a few of these that I use.

Regular Posts: 64	The hooks are solid on an ed wright or at least on 2 of mine. I'm sure you can find some way to rig it up. You can just get a flat leather curb/slobber strap like you use on a snaffle.

I have had a few that were sensitive and I used a flat leather curb strap like this one http://www.sstack.com/western_bitscurbs_curb-chains-straps/billy-ro... . I would not use rawhide because it is stiff and does not have much give and you will have the same type of problem. This strap is also good for long shank bits so the end of the shank do not flip up ;) which is a problem I had with one of my Ed Wright bits.

boon Posts: 1	I was at a Ed Wright clinic years ago and was having the same problem with my mare. He told me to take a chunk of rubber hose and cut it into 3, 1 1/2 inch pieces , and slid them over the chain. Worked great.
