Hi
Im posting this for a friend,
He has an old gelding, barrel horse for his kid that is sway backed.
My friend would like suggestions on what to do to get the saddle to fit the horse better..
He said someone suggested shims on the back to level the saddle out..He said the front sits very high.
I told him ya'll would be able to answer his question.
Thanks!

I wouldn't shim if it's sitting high on the front anyways.....will put more pressure on the middle/back. I'd look at a corrector pad, I have never used one but know several who do and they love them

I'd go with a Diamond Wool Pressure Relief pad. 3 removable shims on both sides to customise fit. Leave them all in or take some out. I use this pad with my gelding and it works great.

I got a corrector pad a few years ago and it absolutely did not work on my sway backed horse. Worked great for other problems but not sway back.

Here is a picture of the horse. Hopefully it will post. It won't let me post it for some reason. I can email it to anyone who would like to see. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Reinsman has a saddle pad specifically for sway backed horses I would try that first
The horse saddle shop has some interesting info on fitting saddle and pad on a sway backed horse

My mom's horse is very swayback and I use a Tucker bridge pad on him. Helps a lot.

Ditto. Years ago my dad bought a jam up calf horse....with a sway back. He wasn't old, either. He bought a Corrector pad and an OrthoFlex saddle to accommodate the sway. I believe Len Brown
(?
) makes both.

My sister had an old horse that was very sway backed and she rode him with a round skirt SaddleRight pad and a round skirt Ammerman saddle and he was sound as a dollar without any back pain etc.

To me the looks of this horses back is not that bad, but my suggestion for a saddle would be one that had some rock to the bars. And getting a bit more weight on him, his top line could use it.

well id do exercises to get a stronger back and stronger stomach line but thats not practical for a older kids horse and stuff so maybe a gel pad would help. he doesnt like like a classifed sway back.. more like a weak topline ..
