things that don't kill us (knock on wood ) will only make us stronger. I think even if she wont turn out to be the best thing ever (or she could) if you learn to turn her into something workable you will gain much knowledge as a horse person knowledge is POWER. I didn't have a choice but to learn how to train particular horses and did not have an option of getting another... now im pretty confident and feel I have many tools for teaching young horses that normally would have people backed into a corner. I encourage people to be open minded and problems solvers for the ones that don't come as easy because it WILL make you better horseman.

Thank you, Thistle2011. This is my thought exactly. While she is aggressive and potentially dangerous, what good would it do, either her or me to just send her off? I have dealt with aggressiveness before, not to this extent, but I do see it as a learning experience. I do not have the luxury to send her off to auction and go pick up another to try. I also feel that when she eventually has a job, she will be an extremely willing and hard working little mare. The dilemma is getting her to that point. It's going to be tough, challenging, and trying for sure, but I'm ready to give it a whirl!

Thank everyone who has left some POSITIVE advice and words of encouragement. I will try to keep everyone updated on her progress as I try out all of these products and ideas!

Prayers for your safety and success!
You've gotten lots of good advice, and if you can't pick up another, working through with this one will make you a better horse person and teach you lots, even if it doesn't pan out.
I had a troublesome one (though nothing like that) that I got rid of, and I always regret not working through it. I feel like I didn't give her a fair shake.

 I'd cut the grain.
and rewatch the CA DVDs....I remember one episode where the horse was coming after the owner in the round pen.  It took one timely whip on the ass while round Penning and that horse straightened out pretty quick.

Anytime a horse tries to kick at my dad they get a swift kick in the belly.  Just saying.  I would always cringe but that's better than a hospital bill!!!! The last young horse that kicked at my dad he sent her on the slaughter truck.

cheryl makofka - 2014-01-21 8:42 AM Too many good horses, since you guys can can them, get someone to shoot her. You life is worth more then a cranky grade horse.

Normally I am against a bad tempered horse. But in this case, I really must disagree with this advice.

This is a 2 year old. Mayby she has a REASON for being the way she is. Maybe she's had bad experiences and simply is protecting herself.

Like someone else mentioned, I would try to lay her down. It's amazing what that can do for a horse with a bad, disrespectful attitude. You have to break them down and then build them back up. If I did that and she was still nasty, then I might reconsider my position on getting rid of her permenantly.

speedjunkie - 2014-01-21 11:17 AM mare Magic is Raspberry leaves... and yes it does work on some moody mares. you can find mare Magic at most feed stores. but if not - online stores like Valley Vet have it. or if you have any good health food stores you can find the leaves there and but about 1lb. you feed like 1/2 oz or less a day.(what you can scoop up in a 2oz measure usually works on my mares.)Β

This^^^^ Β Google it and see what comes up so you can read up on it. I know it works on some horses, but not all, so I would just try and see if it will help out some on your mare. Goodluck with herΒ

MARE MAGIC works well on curbing my mare's estrus cycle issues ... the longer you feed it, the better it works. I'm not real sure how it works on younger horses with attitude problems ....

If it helps I will tell you about my TB mare given to me as a 15 year old mare no one could deal with by a very kind lady who was a good rider.

Now I am not a horse trainer, just a trail rider. The first year or so was a gong show of battles on the trail, bucking rearing etc. Then when riding her in circles she pulled a suspensory and had to be laid off a few months.  Rode another year then she pulled a DDFT branch in front foot. Rehab another year.  However, I had tried regumate for a bit and it seemed to help and with the second injury I thought I would just get her ovaries out . Why not?  I could not ride and I like being poor.

So down to the vet clinic in Wa. and they did the operation. What they did that was really smart was to do a biopsy on the ovaries after. One had a malignant tunor inside, not a visible cyst and the vet said probably part of her problem.  She was mean and nasty and would bite and kick people just unreal before this although she and I were not too bad.

Now the dangerous edge is off and she is just frightened mostly when I ride her,  not nasty or mean , no bucking or rearing or really bad behavior, just will not settle sometimes, and I am working on calming her down.    Not perfect, but a lot better.

No wonder she looked all muscled up like a stallion. She is now 19 going on 20 so probably ingrained by now. The thing was when I ultra sounded her before using regumate the ovaries look good. When I put her on regumate to go south she did not show anything abnormal in the overies, and when the surgeon took them out he said they looked perfect.

So, just a comment that maybe you should talk to a vet, maybe do a hormonal panel on her or get a Parelli type trainer etc. A really good trainer Darryl Gibb up here did lay her down to teach her to trailer load two years ago and that seemed to get her attention.  He said she just had never been taught to lead properly from the get go and was able to fight with everyone and scare them off or make them give up on her.

But with injuries and layoff she reverted back two years later when I tried to load her myself a few months ago. Just need  towork on that. I need to get my trainer back. So, just my two cents.  I appreciate the difficulty some of these horses have now that I have been through this. I thought I could ride her down but you cannot tite this horse out and it just broke down her tendons in the end. I am not happy with how I handled this horse at first but we are getting along a lot better now.

This horse is either mentally deranged from a head injury or lack of oxygen when being born etc. , or  has a hormonal , pain , or metabolic problem, or just is a very frightened young horse who needs to go back to basics and needs a trainer who can work on the fears and problems she has.
Please i am not being critical. Just adding this if it helps.

Cheers,
Coastal Rider

Scary deal.  If she has your number get someone to help you the first few sessions.  If you have an older, solid, alpha type horse you might have good luck working the colt off of them.  Both for your safety and the colts need to learn his role in things.
