| As soon as I hook my horse and wrap my legs, he commits to the turn.
Does anyone else have or had this issue?
What and how to fix?

This!
We've always trained our horses to flex around the inside leg and barrel. We open our outside leg up so the rib is free from pressure. Distributing your weight on the outside stirrup will help you be able to open your outside leg up and use your inside leg as needed.
We have a few horses that were broke to stop when the rider sits down and "wraps" their legs around the horses ribs, using thigh and calf pressure but keeping their heels out of them. If your horse was broke in a similar way it may be possible that he is reading your body position as a cue to engage his butt and turn. |

| Very interesting.
I have been doing 120 plus sit ups weekly for a year, and walk/jog 2 miles 5 days a week.
Our trainer has shortened my stirrups.
A friend noticed that I was wrapping my legs too soon, although I can stay up over him two handed to the spot, but my legs are cueing him turn.
The trainer has me riding forward(leaning).
I read a Charmanye James Rodman article last night that indicates one should look at your spot down the outside of your horse instead of the inside, as this will distribute weight to the outside stirrup.
I agree that I am trying to stabilize myself has he is hard to ride and is trained to turn once my leg passes the barrel, then he will drag his hind end and turn.

Situps won't do as much for your core as planks. It sounds like you need to stop wrapping your legs - plain and simple. Even riding bareback I don't wrap my legs. Hold with your thighs.
BTW - I don't think Charmayne would like to be referred to with the last name Rodman. |
