I have a 5 year old mare that has been a bit of a messy mare in the past and seems like she is making a mess of herself pretty regularly if you know what I mean. Yesterday I rode her for the first time this winter and she will just stop and do the pee thing every once in a while and she has quite the mess down her legs. She is not in a barn and not under lights. Is this normal for this time of year?

Not sure. It seems a bit early but the length of daylight IS 60 mins more than it was when the days started to get longer back on Dec. 21st. That might be enough to trigger her clock.

The weather and days has one of mine confused as well. She 'thought' she was in heat for a day or two, then changed her mind. lol She's female, she's allowed to do that :)

Days are getting longer now so I would say she could be transitional. She may be showing heat but not producing any real good follicles.

It's definitely possible, though I don't know how common. I had a stud climb a wall (like 8-10 feet) to get to my mare in January, and I ended up having a foal in December lol.

Young mares are notorious for doing weird hormonal things. Both mine have been acting like they were in in December and then again this month. The 5 year old transitioned out like she should.

One of my mares is currently at the vet being bred. She's not under lights. Granted I'm in southern California and it's been in the 80s for a few weeks.

Two of my mares did the same thing.  ONe was a complete wench and the other one had all of hte symptoms of being sick but the vet said they thought an early heat.  I talked to my friend about it and she said with a new year and new moon and crazy weather will do that to mares.

I guess I didn't even think anything of it but I noticed my 6 year old "being messy" a week or two ago also.

Heat cycles have more to do with length of day than temps, though a big temp swing may stall one out of a cycle.
Mine is startng her transitional heat. She's not messy per say, but she's a little extra witchey lately. Her heat cycles are hard on her and tend to trigger a little bit of her EPM symptoms (which was happening late last week) due to the extra inflammation. I doubled up her supplements and took care of both problems, LOL.

My 6 year old was in 'messy' heat twice this winter..  Other 3 never even noticed..  She's a pain when in, so we are looking into something to help keep her 'out'..

We are in S. TX/Hill Country I had a few college gals over the other day riding their mares and noticed they were in transition. I forewarned them to write a note on the calendars so that they could give horomones for the gals that do better not getting "horomonal".

Not all mares go into anestrus.  I saw one of my open mares teasing to another mare a week ago.  They usually aren't in very strong during the winter.  But yes they can come in heat in the winter.  Like all things it depends on the mare.

I have a 5yr old that is coming in right now with no lights. However, if your girl tends to be messy and seems to be "in" more that she should, she could have a urinary track infection. I have never had a horse with a UTI but have heard the signs can be similar to a heat and they are normally messy.
