| We just moved to a new area and are trying to get a feed program based around the area's hay. We have two horses that have trouble with their skin. It tears very easily. One is worse than the other. Front's of her fetlocks, if she itches on anything tears her skin. They both have scabs on their hocks. When they lay down the outside on the back of their hocks scabs. We've had several deep freezes so I don't think its a bug? Maybe? Any obvious mineral abundance or deficiency cause this? |

Location: The Great Northwest | Well my first guess would be Herdia. I would get them to a vet for testing. |

| I would guess the same, you can order your own tests online through UC Davis. |

| I would guess Scratches. just because it's on their hocks and fetlocks mainly. scratches are usually caused by bacteria, fungal, or parasitic infections. Does it look like this:

Location: Great NW | would like to see photos. the hock ones sound like the ground is to hard where they have to lay down (if they are sore in the hocks, stifles or hips they will also make sores on the hocks from scraping them when they get up. the ankles could also be caused from laying on rough hard ground. |

Location: Up and over to the right | Maybe have the vet test for deficiencies or toxicities. Fetlocks that are scabbing and peeling are most likely scratches. Hock sores can be from lying on hard ground (my horse gets them if he's not in enough shavings). |

Location: Here | sometimes the hock sores are caused by sore hocks. a horse with sore hocks gets up differently. I dont think you have a mineral problem. pictures would help |

| Not Herda because that said it was genetic, definately not genetic. I'll get some pictures today. I don't think it's scratches because it's on the front side of the fetlock on the one horse. I'll take some pictures today. We sent the one out to pasture to try and clear it up but actually as simple as it is, the bedding might be the cure. |
