Hi everyone, Just looking for a little advise. I have just started my search for a new barrel prospect. I have found a nice young mare in my price range and would like some input on her bloodlines. On her top side her grandsire (TB) has a speed index of 106, with truckle feature one generation off her papers. Bottom side she has Pacific Bailey on her papers, Dash for Cash one generation off and Jet Deck is two generations off. I know she is bred to run but what are your thoughts as far as barrel prospect and breeding potential. Would these bloodlines be suitable for a good barrel horse and possibly brood mare, if for some reason I am no longer able to run her? Would her bloodlines even matter if she proves herself? What are your honest opinions?

Having those bloodlines is good.  Having those bloodlines OFF of the papers is questionable.  People look for the big names up close, not miles away.  If you breed the mare, then that's one more spot off the papers.

That is what you call a strong in depth pedigree. very good choice for a barrel horse.

If you prove her, it matters much less. Most of those names are back aways though. I wouldn't breed her (esp. without a performance record) unless she was an own daughter of something pretty special.

If you want a prospect with long term value, bloodlines matter... up close.  I just got offered a really nice mare with no real pedigree up close.  She's won a lot of rodeo money in TX, OK and KS.  I can't use her even for free.  I honestly don't think I could sell her babies for enough to pay for their feed.  Now if she had won that money around here, maybe I could take the chance.

Thanks for the input so far! It gives me more to think abuot. I'm in no position to be breeding right now but I was running a grade mare who came up lame and its sad that I can no longer use her for anything. I seen this mare advertised as a potential brood mare so I thought it 'd be nice to get some other opinions on her pedigree.

My gelding has all but DFC, and only 2 are actually on his papers. PB and Truckle Feature, as a barrel prospect he is an animal. He's my evil kanevil and has moves that make my hair stand on end. He's fast and can move, he's getting started this spring but with his potential and what he has shown me I have high hopes for him.

How far back is Pacific Bailey on her  pedigree?  I really like his bloodline especially on the dams side. Except for Truckle we all those bloodlines up close on papers in our barn. All are good solid horses.  As far as her being a broodmare, as others have said it depends on how close they are and the foals papers will have them one more place out.  Also, unless you are in the position to do embryo transfers you will get one foal per year.  By the time you pay stud fee, mare and foal care you have to ask if you will make enough off the foal to cover expenses. We owned a own daughter of PB and bred her to keep the foal.  Also, for some records speak louder than bloodlines. I tend to look more for traits in the bloodlines than records. Better chance of having a horse you can get with. Records are made by horse and rider combinations. Not horse alone. Personally; I would enjoy her and cross the broodmare bridge when I got to it.

Pacific Bailey is in her third generation, last spot on her Dams side. So if she were to have a foal PB would not show on its papers.

For me that would be close enough for me to seriously consider her. I find his traits along with the Dash and Jet traits to he very strong no matter the cross. Right now you are looking for something to run barrels and if you train her in a way that she thinks she is doing everything because it is her idea you should enjoy her and do well. Hopefully you would get a lot of good years and good races from her.

Thank you for the input! Her brother is just starting to run pro rodeo. He has been clocking really well and I like his running style! I really try to get my horses running automatic. I don't like to have to pull on them or use a lot of pressure. I like to keep my ques sudle while making sure they are staying correct. I assume that would be the same as letting her think its her idea. I guess I will have to go take a look at her and go from there. (She's 7 hours from me) Thanks again!
