Location: Land of the Icicles, Minnesota | My horse is a coming 4yr old Firewater Flit sired and has a bog spavin in his hocks. There is also fluid in the hock joint. The spavin is very noticeable and tender to touch. Vet said last Nov. it was because of growth spurts but I'm getting nervous-I'm starting him on a joint supplement now hopefully to help!! I've tried magnetics and bot but can't tell a difference. Anyone have suggestions on this or had prior experience???
Thanks! |

Location: Claremore, OK | The most common cause of Bog Spavin in that age of horse is due to OCD lesions in the tibial tarsal joint. Did your vet take X-rays ? |

| over extension of the hock and concurrent excess production of synovia creates bog spavins in any age horse. An acute injury can be reduced considerably with steroids (xrays first to rule out a chip, etc). As long as your horse has had one, and heat and sensitivity still a problem, indicates he has a serious problem. Xray, scope or MRI necessary to find the problem. |

Thats a shame, I would be finding a new vet if they didn't take a swollen hock in a barrel prospect a bit more seriously than that. I call BS on growth spurts causing a swollen hock.
We had a filly (race horse) come up with a puffy hock after her second speed work in company, she got bumped around a bit. Turned out she had bruised a tendon in her hock and developed an infected tendon sheath even though she never broke the skin. Thanks to good vets she was treated and was sound in three months.
I can't stand a vet to fluff me off when I KNOW something is wrong with one of my horses.
Prayers to you and your horse, I would find another vet. |

Location: Opelousas, LA | Many times the OCD will not cause a problem until you put them in training and sometimes they are months into thier performance career before an OCD chip starts causing problems.
Your horse needed x-rays and maybe an ultrasound months ago, if those turn up nothing then scoping or an MRI will be needed.
Find a vet that will take your horses hock soreness seriously and then camp at his place until he figures it out. |

This is correct. I had a horse who I got as a 3YO, was sound and wonderful. ran as a 4YO and did really well. her 5 YO year we had growing pains so i thought. Then I thought maybe I just didn't fit her.. banged my head against the wall trying to figure out what the deal was. Had people tell me it was my riding and I was messing her up. Trainer said no- somethings wrong with horse. Either physical, or behavior (one in the same IMO most of the time). Found an OCD chip in her stifle and surgically removed it. Both referring vet and surgeon felt like it was a within the last 6 mos-1 yr development. |

| Do you have access to a laser? Also try to get him on a good joint supplement. Such as Platinum CJ and then add the Silicon since you are dealing with a lameness issue. |
