This is an off topic vent obviously, so don't click if you don't want to hear my raving...

How do you stop caring? How do you loosen up and let fools be fools and let them risk their lives? Seriously, how do you let go and just stop caring?

I'm known as "Captain Buzzkill" in my circle of friends and in my family. I don't know whether to wear that crown with pride or shame. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who gives a **** about anything. I'm ok with having fun...or am I? I guess that means I have to throw caution to the wind and just recklessly risk my life and the lives of the people I care about.

We have a lot of motorized toys (ATV, UTV, Snowmobiles, a boat) among other things...we are lucky to have them and they are fun. Honestly, I really like taking the Snowmobiles out on the trails. Hey, I might even gun it in a straightaway!
What I don't like is towing a person on a shabby sled with a shabby cable behind a snowmobile in a pine tree field with tight turns at breakneck speed. Little to no protective wear on any of the participants - no, that would be NO FUN! It's not FUN until you fly off that sled and break your neck when you crash into a pine tree! Tis a flesh wound, good people!

Oh, and did I mention the horses? Apparently it is A-OK for an 8 year old (totally inexperienced in horses, I might add) to be in with the horses, opening stall doors that should be shut, moving two horses into the same stall and then closing the door and "hanging out" with two 1200# animals...COMPLETELY UNSUPERVISED.

Stop me now, seriously.

So, how do I stop caring...or is it obsessing? No one else seems concerned about anything so maybe I shouldn't be either. I hate feeling like the overbearing safety guy...the hag no one wants to be around because she's no fun...Captain Buzzkill. How do I stop?

It is hard to do. I like to have fun myself but those to me are the same as drinking and driving. Everyone that does it thinks its fine until someone gets hurt or maybe killed. Just because you are RESPONSIBLE does not mean you are a buzzkill. Personally, I would wear that crown with honor. As for caring, you can't really just stop, or at least I can't. You just have to let people learn the hard way if they do not want to listen. Sometimes hard to swallow but I have found that to be true. Good luck to you.

This is so true and it is what I have been trying to tell myself for a while. I used to like riding double on our snowmobiles (yeah, snowmobiles again) with someone else driving and just enjoying the ride...until I realized that most of the time no one knew how to actually operate one. And I'm not calling myself an expert here. LOL. Snowmobiles, at least the old ones we have, are different from other "toys"...they are NOT fool proof and demand a certain amount of respect or you will be in the snow...if you're lucky. My cousin and I were lucky when we landed in the snow when she couldn't make a turn. She wasn't even being reckless either, she was actually doing really well. It wasn't her fault, but they are SO easy to tip over. So now I prefer to ride alone, where I can control the speed around turns etc.

I hate to blab on and on but this has really been bothering me lately.

When you figure it out, let me know. I'm the "responsible" one out of my friends and sometimes I really wish I could just let loose and have fun but I CANT. I am always the one thinking about risks, potentially dangers, etc. You are not alone!

For serious, you say? Well, I'm relieved that I'm not alone in this. Thank you!

Thanks to all of you...I thought I was just...well, strange. LOL

You are not alone at all. Some days I feel like I should be coming home in an oatmeal colored sweater to six cats with names that all start with "P" and in bed after a cup of hot tea by 7:30. Other days, I feel like "tonight is the night I get arrested." The old lady days happen much more frequently.
Its not that extreme of course. I just like everyone to be responsible and not act a fool which makes me the lame babysitter sometimes. But I've come to terms with that and my REAL friends love me for it.
