Here is my 2 cents....
1st I would make them handle their own horse, that way they can figure out how difficult she is to handle and I'm not putting myself in a dangerous situation.
2nd Ask them if they have the drugs that are needed and that you will be happy to properly administer the medication for them.

I think I would probably keep helping the horse because I couldn't live with myself knowing it was in pain or whatever, but I would make a basic list of supplies that they need to have on hand (and where to buy them) and I would make it known that I'd only be able to help if they had their own drugs and supplies and whatnot. If they respect you- they'll got get the supplies and keep asking for help. If not- they'll call someone else and it will no longer be your problem.

Administering the drug, even if it belongs to them, I could be wrong, can get you in trouble, legally

The way people are these days, I wouldn't trust them not to sue you if you are doctoring their colicy horse and it ends up dying! (Not saying you would be responsible, but try proving that in court.)

^^^^^THIS........I would hand them the syringe of banamine (if needed) and say give your own injection..........too many sue happy people these days and yes, YOU can get in trouble in most states for practicing vet medicine without a license.

Thank you all for the replies. Will need to read through when I am home on my PC. The banamine is paste. I will not do iv. The last time I had them administer it because I was at work and she was hysterical. Said she was dying. I told her if she is that bad give her the med and call vet immediately.   They did give med but did not  vet. She was up and doing better when I got there an hour later.

squeek - 2014-02-12 1:28 AM I feel a little frustrated but at the same time I always go and look after the mare.  I have been there to help through abcesses, 2 colics and take all my own supplies, including Banamine.  Not once have they offered to repay my costs.  They are both friends but don't know how to make them understand that they need to have a vet see that mare occasionally.  I am their only vet care for her.  Just venting a bit because I have tried to drop subtle hints.  Apparently they haven't worked.

She is nasty nasty when it comes to anyone handling her and I have even had the owner mad at me when I disciplined her for trying to kick me then run me over.  She didn't suceed. This was over having her feet done by my shoer.  I have told them to work with her...nothing.  Anyway, only place I can vent because I am friends with the wife on facebook and she is a good friend but she just brushes off what I tell her also..then as soon as something is wrong. RING RING!

They are not good friends, they are users.  Practice saying NO!  And block their number.

The last time she called me at work saying the horse was dying, had been attacked by a cougar.  This is possible where I live and there have been attacks out here.  I tried to get her to stop crying and tell me exactly what was going on.  Asked if there were definite claw marks etc.  Why did she think cougar.  Her Dad had told her over the phone that was what it was.  Uh WHAT?  Turns out there was a pack of coyotes that were going through the pasture, they let out yips, spooked the mare, she ran through the trees.  What little she had of marks on her side were small marks from trees.

I had them go to my house and get the paste.  BRAND new tube as my gelding had just gone through a fence and hit a T-post 1 1/2 wks earlier.  Told her how to dial it down and to go give it to her.  They did but not before she struck at them.  Then they tossed the tube.  I did get angry when I asked where it was and they told me they threw it away.  I told them you owe me $45.  They thought they could go to feed store to buy it.  NO!  They did find it and returned it.  So before I left that day I told the husband and wife both at separate times.  You MUST work with her.  You MUST take care of her feet(horrible).  Some day they will need a vet out and at times even they cannot even catch her let alone get a halter on.

AND to add to it, when I got there an hour later, they were drinking beer and watching football.  I asked has she pooped?  I don't know...

You all are right.  I just need to avoid helping, it is at least 1/2 hr to get a vet here if not longer.  I had the horse in my avatar colicing but I was on the phone with my vet giving updates,...temp, gut sounds and poop etc.  luckily I caught her early too but took loading her in the trailer after a couple hours and OF COURSE!!!  Instant poop.

Next time they call for help give them the number of the nearest vet. They can only use you if you allow it. Any real friend would not take advantage of you.

You are so right.  While I have tried to help, they refuse to properly care for her.  I did not need the $300+ vet bill I had just prior but I know my limits and even tho I was sure there was no stitching what the T post had done, I knew he needed a tetanus and antibiotics.  Which the vet gave me a 500 jar so I have more for another time.  I also bought a new tube of Banamine.  I usually only need 1 a year.  Was still good on Bute so didn't restock that.  I just need to be a little more uncaring.  In this instance anyway.

Been there with my hubby's ex-roomie. He used to borrow one of our horses and have us haul it for him to compete on. He never paid the bills (vet, farrier, hauling, etc) and he didn't come and ride the horse before the competition. He was a beginner rider and really needed the practice.

I finally got tired of hauling the extra horse and paying the extra expenses. The last time he called we made a verbal agreement that he had to come and ride the horse, pay the vet bill, farrier, and hauling fees along with his own entry fee before we would bring the horse to the competition. He agreed but never showed up to ride and we didn't see a dime. He called the night before the competition to make sure we were bringing "his" horse. When we reminded him of the agreement and the fact that he didn't hold up his end of the bargain he didn't call again.

^^^^^This is so true! I just cut the noose from around my neck with a so called 'friend' due to her overkill in mooching.  She has the victimism part down like well trained actress. Fortunately for her horse that she abandoned out here, he gets fabulous care out of my bank account. The upside is after 10+ years of 'friendship,' her lack of compassion and caring for this horse pi$$ed me off enough to do the right thing and cut her out of my life. She has 2 other horses, but I can't worry about that. I can't afford to be her friend any longer.  She'll no doubt find another compassionate person to mooch off of.
To the OP, the time will come when you will tire of it. Only you will know when. I can't blame you for helping.  We do it for the animal, not the useless human attached to it.

I am very tired of it.  It truely saddens me because the only future that mare has if they decide to sell her is in a kill buyers truck.  I did get a little angry with them last time.  Pretty sure they have not followed through on working with her.  I had to twitch her once just to get banamine into her.  Again, gave them a large syringe and told them, start using it to give her applesauce now and then.  She won't freak, strike etc if it has to be done with meds.  I have 2 that when the need arises YES I call the vet or have the vet out.  That is why I always have a small supply of meds on hand.  It will usually take at least an hour to get one of the vets out.  1/2 hr if they are sitting in their truck doing nothing.  Which we all know never happens when you have an emergency.  LOL!

I know you are sick of it. That's why you are posting here. You are doing it for the animal and that's the exact reason we all help moochers. It's a double edged sword.  Help the horse and continue to be taken advantage of, or turn your back and have the guilt for the horse weigh on your conscience because the moocher has no conscience. I guess the saving grace in my situation is I allowed her to place the horse here, and she never showed back up. He is at least here, so I don't have to worry about facing her again.
It's a tough situation and I truly wish you all the best. Just don't get hurt.
