I have a 15 yr old that has always been a picky eater but more so in the last 2 months. I have tried several dry foods and wet food (expensive and cheap). He goes in spurts where he will eat one for a while and then just quits. So then I try another. I have given him boiled chicken breast and rice. Now he is not eating the rice. What else can I give him with the chicken breast and how much of each item?

I guess I should have explained why I had to change with the dry food. He has been on the same dog food most of his life until the last year. He wasn't keeping the food down and what would come up was undigested so I switched to all natural. That worked for the past year. Then he started having problems keeping that down so I went to a grain free. That was good for a couple months then he got a bacterial infection. I explained to the vet what was happening and he recommended Royal Canine Gastro. Which is rx only. He did well on that for about 3-4 wks and then quit eating it. He was very weak at the time because he got a second gastrointestinal infection. This is when I gave him the chicken/rice during each infection. Tried dry food again and still same issue so I switched to wet. Has not thrown up since the change and has a lot more energy. However, this week he is not eating well again. He does not have a fever and no blood in his stool so I don't believe it is an infection. I'm just wanting to get some food in him and would like to know what else I can put with the chicken breast. Thanks

Sounds like you have created a monster.. (not being hateful, I am a RVT).  If you keep changing his food, he will continue to stop eating the current food.  Find a food that meets his health needs and stick to it.  If he stops eating for a day or two, leave it in his dish, he will not starve to death with food in front of him.  Most of the time, when they realize they are not going to get a different food, they will start to eat again.

I have a 16 yr old dog that stopped eating last summer. The vet had me put her on a chicken and rice diet. He had me put some chicken bullion in the water I boiled the chicken in to keep her interested and enhance the flavor. He also told me to give her some cottage cheese every day with it. It has worked beautifully! So I fix a pot of water, I add a big tablespoon of chicken bullion, 2 chicken breasts, a few bits of beef stew meat, and a cup n a half of uncooked rice. I cook it all together , then shred the chicken and stew meat so it all mixes well. It makes a big bowl of food that lasts a couple days and I keep it in the fridge. When I dish her plate, I fill her plate and give her a heaping spoonfull of cottage cheese on the side. She loves it and has done very well on it. Oh, he also had me give her 5cc of lixitinic( for the horses, it's like red cell) orally once a day because she was slightly anemic as well.

THANKS!! I wasn't sure if the bullion would be too salty. Will give this a try. Maybe with the bullion he will eat the rice.

I started making my own dog food to mix with their dry food. I don't feed entirely homemade dog food because it doesn't contain all of the nutrients that they need. I cook a whole chicken and mix it with rice, pureed cooked carrots, and raw eggs. Dogs love it.

My sisters GSD has always had tummy issues and gets frequent bouts of diarrhea.  She fed him Wellness kibble plus she'd cook chicken and stuff for him.  She moves all over the country because of the military, and at the last vet she took him to, she was telling her about all his GI issues, and the vet said he's got inflammatory bowel disease and she started him on fluconazole and to give him a specific type of kibble (not sure which, I'll text her and find out and let you know).  Ever since then, Magoo has been fine.  He actually has an appetite and wants to eat his food, which she always fought with him to eat.
