Location: 31 lengths farms | Thank you to everyone that helped with some questions I had about treatment for EPM. I am having my mare tested, vet is on vacation this week and the fill in vet is only doing emergency cases so have to wait till next week when Doc gets back for the test. I had looked up symptoms of her head shaking issues and have been treating her in the meantime as a horse with Head Shaker Syndrome, put her on a product that is high in Magnesium, doubled it like the product said to do for the first 2 weeks or so and she seems much happier, is eating better again and also on clear days I've been keeping her fly mask on as they say bright sunlight will act like bright light to a migraine sufferer. Will be having ears and teeth checked again when Doc comes out to do the EPM test also just hoping or not hoping that it is something silly and stupid like a bad tooth or something in her ear that is the cause of the head issues. I have a list of product that quite a few of you suggested for both issues, EPM and HSS and I appreciate the help.

Location: 31 lengths farms | Thanks, she has been doing well the 4 days or so, let her out in the pasture today and she ran and bucked and played for about 5 minutes non stop. The week before I had started the Mag she wouldn't even trot, just moped around and went and found a corner to stand in. Broke my heart because she is normally the kind that runs like a freight train when she first gets turned out. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Negative on her test for EPM...Doc didnt' even really want to do it seeing as he said when he looked at her that he was 99.9% sure she did not have EPM after watching her back up the small incline that I use to keep their topline built up and seeing her travel straight and in an arc but we did it anyway to try to rule things out. Pretty certain it is Head Shakers, he recommended Cypri_something or other for it, I believe it is a type of antihistamine or something like that that they have found helps the nerve not fire repeatedly is my understanding. Also Melatonin and Magnesium which I've had her on the Mag which seems to have made her much more comfortable, not rubbing her face on her forelegs like before. Her ears where clean of mites and ticks, teeth were good, eyes were clear but reacted strongly to the light being shined in them which is a strong indicator of the HSS at times and a lot of the symptom that I was seeing in her. So, please send up a prayer that we can make her more comfortable with the treatment for protocols for Head Shakers.
Any one have any background with the one product he recommended, the cyprihy-something or other...sorry, things were kind of a rush for me on the actual name of it.... |

Location: Oklahoma | Is it cyproheptadine? I don't know about the use in horses, but it is used in people for allergies, hay fever, etc. |

Yes that's the meds they use on head shakers. It helps some and not others. My mare was one it didn't work on, but I remember it being relatively cheap (and this was 17 years ago when I was a poor college student!). Seriously buy the German nose net that u posted about earlier if you wan to ride this horse. It is amazingly effective and so cheap! I wish you luck, this is such a frustrating disorder :-/ |
