This breaks my heart... but it might be time to sell my gelding... I have only owned him for a year and a half, as a replacement for my phenomenal mare who went a little crazy and is now pregnant... He has the most personality in any horse I've ever had, and runs 1D locally, but 3D in the big shows and gets outran by a second to a second and a half at my college rodeos... What would yall do in this situation? sell for something faster or keep working with him? It would break my heart to see him go, but then again we never really "clicked".. any advice would be appreciated!

Keep working with him, college rodeo is a 4 year affair but local jackpots are forever.

I would say you are the only one who can answer that.  What is your end goal?  Are  you happy with running 1D locally or do you want to be 1D at big shows.  Are you traveling a lot or trying to save by mostly only hitting local events?  I mean, if you are only traveling mostly locally, you can't get better than 1D anyhow.

My goal is to be a competitive person at the really big shows and in the WPRA. I know this gelding won't take me there but that's where I want to end up. My dream is the nfr (I know that's everyone's dream) but I know if I work hard enough I have a chance!

Time to take a step up on another horse and even then you may keep looking for that perfect horse just like all the NFR gals do .... if you look at the years past on NFR riders or champions ... after that one perfect horse got injured or too old ... those riders were left without a competitive mount and disappeared/out ran to the up and coming girls that had their perfect horse ...

Cervi is the exception .... she discovered the mare power in her first horse HAWK was the genetic connection and there was Stingray out of a daughter of Hawk's dam that put her back into NFR big time again ..... and she has a another one named MP Del Rey that is a full brother to Stingray ... here is the mare power Cervi is still depending on to keep her winning ........ ... http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/miss+meter+jet

Fallon Taylor is another excellent exception ... she owned sire and dam that did well for her at pro rodeos and the NFR for many years as a young girl .. ... after overcoming accidents and another career she is back in the race to win one more or a dozen NFR's with sons and daughters of the original mare and stallion ...

These two are riding family raised horses while most of the others kept searching and found their perfect horse and bought him without any second thoughts ... !!

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR SEARCH FOR THE PERFECT HORSE!!

Thank you so much for this! I am hoping I can get a "home grown" horse like theirs out of my foal that will be born in the next month. I hope my mare can produce some big winners for me but in the mean time I'm needing something that is everything I've ever wanted. But those are rare to find without wiping the bank dry!
