I'm always trying to learn more about well, everything, horse related. And I know I need to educate myself on bits and their uses.

So, I've read the descriptions under the Goostree bits on different websites, but I'm interested to hear more personal experiences/opinions.

On what type of horse would you use the Simplicity? What about the Delight? What about the Double Gag?

What has been YOUR experience using these bits? What about the different mouthpieces offered? What would make you choose a specific mouthpiece?

Thanks!

Well I don't have much experience with the simplicity, I've only had a few months but I absolutely love it! My horse gets high headed when he gets excited and he seems so much calmer and wants to keep his head lower with this bit without me asking him to break at the poll. I have the dogbone mouth peice and I feel like he likes it better than a snaffle. The dogbone is gentler on their mouths so that there isn't so much pressure on the bars of the mouth (or so I've read). Im looking to get a double gag sometime soon, so Im anxious to see how I like it!

That's good to know! I've been very intrigued by these bits and have always wondered what kind of horse you'd use them in! :)

I can only remember the simplicity off the top of my head.

It is a gag bit and I believe they are not designed to have a curb strap. As with any gag there is lip pressure, poll pressure first then you get the bars and tongue pressure.

As someone said that the dogbone is easier on the bars, I was taught different, I was taught that the dogbone is easier on the tongue as the tongue is not pinched as a classical single broken mouthpiece is.

I find that you have to have a responsive horse and soft hands to use this bit correctly as I think it has a 4 inch cheek so someone can be lifting 4 inches of lips before the mouthpiece hits the top and stops.

Yep! I read that thread before I posted. I understand how the bits work, my question is more along the lines of what type of horse would you use one on? What would make you decide to use one of these bits over say a short shank Sherry cervi?

Well, the horse I run in a goostree ran in a cervi short shank and it tore up his mouth, just too heavy, my horse is touchy about his mouth and a heavyweight bit is out of the question, he definitely sticks his nose out naturally and the goostree brings him back to me, I feel like I can control most of his body most of the time with the goostree, raise my hand up he gives his nose pull towards my hip a bit more I get his ribs. It definitely fits my hands since I can ride all of our horse with it. I think it is very much the same feel as a d ring snaffle but with more if you are any where near ND you can try mine.

Thank you so much for offering LMS, that's very kind of you, but I'm in Illinois. :( Hmm well maybe my best option would be to buy one and try it out. I suppose I could sell it fairly easy if it doesn't work! Thank you for explaining why you use one! I sure appreciate it!

My guy is generally very quiet and responsive in anything really... but he knows his job and gets amped up when we practice.... he responds well to it and seems to be super comfortable, but Im ready to see what he is like in a  competition run!!

I bought a double gag dogbone and Ive been riding my gelding in it for a month. He seems to like it better than his old bit (Jr. Cow). He use to slightly pull on the bit at a walk with the Jr. Cow, now he doesnt do that. My gelding is more responsive to the Double gag, If I lope him in a circle he seems to hold his frame alot better without rolling out his hips. I put a curb stocking stuffer this bit to help with his stop. Its put on really loose but I think it helps him out. When walking/trotting/loping around the barrels its surprising how well this bit works. I barely have to guide him around the barrels with the reins and he stays up underneath himself till we complete the turn.

I have no idea where the "stocking stuffer" came from. sorry about the typo.

I've had similar results with this bit. I really like it. PS... for some reason they have strap .... on .... changed to stocking stuffer lol. i guess just in case you are talking about something... that isn't appropriate. lol

I also use the Simplicity with smooth/chain mouth piece on my mare who is super sensitive, but has a bit of a gate issue... (she will charge the gate as soon as its open, even if its not our turn...) she only needs a little lift at each barrel...
In my experience, this bit has no "woah" though, so if you have a horse that's hard to stop, or needs a lot of rate, this is not a bit for them. My mare is pretty ratey, so this bit allows me to leave her alone as much as possible, and just get a little extra lift through our turns.

I don't know how to answer your questions,  but I put my guy in a Carol Goosetree Simplicity bit  and I love how he works in it. Plus it's a nice light bit.
