| Thank you everyone for the support! I knew I wasn't crazy for thinking this....she even went as far as to say I owed her $260 in gas money to bring the horse to my house? When we picked the horse up it was like 45 minutes from her house and for her kid to ride and she took the horse home and did lessons with him! And i owe gas money for this? In a way I'm happy it happed so i can see who she REALLY is. We had been friends a long time, and I could never imagine anyone much less her talking to me like that. Just dont understand the insults. |

Well its pretty much a no brainer so many of us don't feel the need to vote. The only mistake I see is there wasn't a contract, other wise its very obviously her bill. |

| I had a neighbor try to get me to pay her vet bill once when one of her horses freaked out and ran thru a fence when my excavator was working in my field. Same neighbor tried to chew me out for putting horses in my back field since it made her horses crazy.
People are crazy. |

| In the end, I'd probably end up being happy with the fact I got the horse back. From the sounds of things, It sounded like you were going to be out lots of money because if she didn't want to pay for an injured horse's vet bills, she sure as heck probably wouldn't have paid you for it anyways! At least in this case you recouped your money and learned this person is a disaster. |

Dont get me wrong yes I am thankful he was not crippled for good. Its just the principal of the situation... if the tables were turned id at least have the decency to talk about it rather than throwing insults and acting so classless, TRYING to hurt someone.. and I would do the right thing and pay for it.. instead of taking full advantage. I think that would at least show some gratitude. Its no small favor ...imo. Not only would I pay for it but I'd feel SO terrible. It was an accident but one i had no control over and not on my property...who ever is using the horse should be responsible. ETA its not the paying the bill part im so upset about its the insults and treating ME like that.. instead of talking about it or admitting that was not normal circumstances. Or a thank you for trying.. sorry it didnt work out...

Location: MD | a 400 dollar vet bill is nothing in the horse world... if she can't afford that or handle that then she has no business owning horses.
chalk it up to lesson learned and cut ties. she knew she was in the wrong when she started calling you those things... that's usually the reaction to someone who doesn't want to deal with reality. I'd be pretty clear to her too that you are cutting ties and want nothing to do with her. (if that is the path that you should choose) |

people have no sense of responsibility. I want to compare this to borrowing someone's car. Surely you wouldn't borrow someone's car and return it to them dirtier than you got it? I sure wouldn't. |

 I Am Always Right

Location: stray dump capital of the world | I went through a similar experience recently with a long time "friend." I let her put a horse on my property with the promise that she would provide for him, but she hasn't. I cut that friendship loose and even though it hurt, she really wasn't a friend to begin with. Funny how everyone around me saw it for what it was, but I guess I had on rose colored glasses. I had to call the vet for her horse even though she told me not to (colic), but she did at least reimburse me for the bill. I have to give her credit for that. Walk away from this. You will be a bit hardened from this experience, as well as shocked and angry. Eventually that will ease when you realize that the friendship was based on what you could do for her. It was a one way deal. |

Location: relocated to Texas | SaraJean - 2014-02-28 2:53 PM Well.....I'm sure it's a lesson learned on your part. But I would NEVER buy a horse for someone else and allow the horse off my property until they had paid me in FULL for the horse. There would have been a contract spelling out all details of the deal as well. You have to protect yourself, nobody else is going to. Yes, she should have paid the vet bill but I don't see that happening considering she dumped the injured horse back in your care. Exactly. You put yourself in a bad position when you bought the horse in the first place. No offense intended, but it sounds like you need to get better friends. Seriously, you need to learn a lesson from this and don't do this again. A gal that I know back home did deals like this with several people, she always got burned. (Then she would call me complaining about her situation. She never seemed to learn from her mistakes.) In her mind she was trying to help them out. In reality, she was being used. Horses are not a necessity, like food and shelter. If someone cannot afford to buy a horse, they probably cannot afford to take care of it either. If they cannot afford it, they shouldn't own one.
Edited to add: Oh, and DO NOT pay the vet bill. It is hers. The horse was one she was supposed to be buying (making payments on), injury happened in her care, on her property, she called the vet, he did the work for her, its her responsibility. The vet will have to deal with her as that is who he performed the work for.

Location: MT | The person that borrowed the money from you is responsible. If they had borrowed the money from the bank to purchase the horse, and then the horse got injured on their place, would there be any question as to who is responsible for the horse and vet bills? |

| Two things---
Neither a borrower or a lender be.
With friends like this, who needs enemies.
When a person starts bashing you about things that have NO BEARING on the issue, they know that they are in the wrong. This I also called bullying and is a legal issue nowadays. |
