Location: Nowhere Special | I went to look at a place today and its well a DUMP in more ways then one.. Ugh But since I'm being a cheapskate I guess I can't complain its of my own doing..
The pasture has been seriously overgrazed to the point of only thing left is weed and rock, has some pretty serious erosion going on due to all this as well. I have seen overgrazed pastures but NOTHING like this I don't even know how you would begin to salvage it.. Its black dirt but kind of a gumbo and the rocks OMG the rocks its like a gravel bed just full of little white rocks the size of your fist.. It would cripple a horse the way it is.. Has anyone ever rehabed a pasture in this poor of condition? I wouldn't even know where to begin or what the costs would be. |

Location: Texas | your cheapest (since your a cheapskate LOL!) is to mow it like crazy and just sling some seed out and hope. You also need to keep horses off of it. If you can rake the seeds in even better.
If you wanna do it right, plow it, plant it, fertilize it, keep it mowed to kill off the weeds, and keep horses off until its well established. and plant a good strong grass. Not something the horses will mow down in a day and never regrow because they've ripped it out by the roots.

| Contact your county soild conservaton service, find out what type of grass grows best in your area, have a soil sample run and get ready to spend some money seeding, sprigging, fertilizing, weed spraying, etc. |

Location: Nowhere Special | Thanks I figured some farming would be in order.. Of which I know NOTHING about.. But what about the rocks? The way it is you couldn't even seed it all the seed would be on top of fist sized rock.. |

And sometimes the only way to get rid of rocks - is pick them up and tote them off. When my children were little this was a great way to discipline them! |

Seriously I would never have to order gravel for the driveway but picking up that much rock would take a lifetime times ten! Never seen so much little rock everywhere! |

| Contact your local soil conservation service or the NRCS in your area. That is what they do, help people get plans together to rehab pastures, graze correctly, and be good stewards of the land.
Also - growing up, my parents had a small paddock/sacrifice area that was full of rocks. My dad paid us 5$ for every 5 gallon pail of rocks we collected out of that pen. What if you offered this as a fund raiser for a local 4-H club? It'd help some kids and think of all the rocks you wouldn't have to haul on your own!

| With proper fertilizing, seeding, etc and adequate rainfall the grass will grow all around the rocks. I had a friend who had a great Bermuda pasture that he could have sold gravel out of, but he lived in an area of the country that got lots of rainfall and he had the money to care for the grass and it grew great. |

Location: Where I am happiest | First and right now you want to spray the weeds and get rid of them.
Second, till it up
Third, rent a rock picker and go over the pasture. It will get all but pebble size rocks up
Fourth seed it really heavy
Fifth, get the water on it
Sixth, keep all horses off it at least rill fall and then limit time and traffic on it.
Next year, you will have nice pasture. Keep water on it and dont let it get over grazed again. Once it's shorter, give it a rest.If you can divide it so you can rotate that is best and keep horses off it in the winter and dont let them back out untill you have at least a 6 inch growth.
