I will give you the back story on how this started.

In 2011 I noticed a crack on the hairline, which turned out to be an abcess.  We had moved and I turned the horses out in their new pasture and the next morning I found him cut up on his chest and he foot tore up.  I got him moved into a pen and got him doctered and then went back and walked the fence to see if I could see what happened.  It looks like he has started fighting with the horses on the other side and got his foot caught in the fence.  Had a few different vets look at him and said he should be fine just keep a shoe on him.

Fast forward to this year.  He has started running awesome the spring and summer of 2013 come October he is not wanting to finish his first barrel (right, same foot that has crack).  I turn him out as things got really hectic with work and my dad having open heart surgery.  In all honesty this horse was not my first priorty for awhile.  At Christmas our landlord calls us (we were out of town) and says this horse can not walk and his leg is swelled up.  We get home the next day and from his ankle to knee what blown up.  I got him in the barn and put a sweat on it for about a week and kept him on bute.  Leg went down but he was still limping pretty good.  Couple of days later he blows an abcess in the exact same spot he did in 2011.  I have heard that an abcess can brew for a long time thus explaining probably why he was not wanting to work in October when I turned him out.

After the 2nd abcess blew it kind of made the crack in his foot open up a little more.  What are some thing I can do do get a healthy hoof and get this crack under control.  Shoer is coming out next week so we will get a game plan started that way.  Shoer I used last year said as long as we keep it trimmed we will not have to have a shoe on him at all times.

Please do not bash me on this as family has been more important than this horse since November so he has been put on the back burner due to that.

I will try and attach a picture that was taken in October/November.

Notch above and below the crack so it doesn't spread. I would also apply fish oil to his cornet band

Once mine burst, I put mine on antibiotics for 10 days. I would also put a poultice on the bottom of his foot, I Have had great success with glycerine and Epsom salts, old trainers at the track use this and they say it will pull anything out, it did for me in 3 days

Yes he gets an epsom salt/water soak but I have heard that unless you can get the infection out of the body an epsom salt soak will do no good.

There was a youtube video posted about what to use but I have not been able to find it.  If someone knows what I am talking about could you please post it here.

I should also add from 2011 to the spring of 2013 this horse only got rode a handfull of times so it isn't like I was beating him into the ground with the crack in his hoof.

Edited because I am obvisouly not thinking clearly this morning and cannot type.

I would try to get some sulfa pills from your vet.  Disolve them in water and give them to the horse orally.  That is one of the best antibiotics for abcesses.  Then soak.  My White Tie mare had a crack like that.  The abcess blew  out the front.  We had to grind the crack down with a dremel tool, fill with apoxy and attach hose clamps to keep it tight.  Egg bar shoes to keep the hoof from flexing.  Add biotin to the diet to speed up growth.  Then the farrier would use something to burn the coronet band to speed up growth.  He said he hates to do that but we needed growth fast and the is the fastest way.

Vet Tech hoof products are fantastic. We've had our farrier rebuild walls on a horse that pulled a shoe with half his foot using this stuff. Horse was sound and the wall grew back nicely.

We've used it lots over the years with great success.

Find a REALLY good shoer who understands quarter cracks and abscesses and regularly works with a vet. My hubby is a racetrack shoer and it's amazing the things they can do with a hoof to help a horse. I think a top-notch shoer will help your horse above all else.

I totally agree with this. My mom had a gelding who due to a poor farrier ended up with a quarter crack that bled. I ended up having to haul to belmont racetrack to meet with a corrective farrier who laced it with wire and sealed it with apoxy. As far as I now he is sound on it. (sold him because he just did not fit my mom).

animal element detox is a great supplement for many things - and one of them is to get the abcesses out you can call Michelle French at animal elelment and she will be glad to explain what all to do also I would add kelp it really helps feet to grow and get stronger but I can tell you from my own experience the a.e. detox has done wonders for my horses feet

Agree with a good farrier. Two abscesses in the same place sounds like that area of hoof has some permanent damage. You may have to be extra vigilant in preventing thrush, etc in the area. Kopertox is an excellent thrush killer/preventative.
