My son's new horse is a bald face and the seller told us he sunburns.  What's the best way to prevent this?
thanks!

Fly mask with the extended nose or keep him up during the day.  I tried everything out there and it either didn't work or my mare would wash it off.  She could even get Desitin off.

I use banana boat spray on sunscreen because it is very light. Spray it on his face and make sure it's doesn't go in his eyes or nose. Since the eyes and nose burn easily on my mare I spray it on my hands and rub it on her nose and around her eyes. Be careful that you don't use a thick sunscreen because they tend to run in their eyes and noses.

If the horse has pink eyelids watch for cancer. My family has had two horses whom got cancer. Our solution was to keep them indoors throughout the day. If we wanted to ride them during the day we used UV extended nose fly masks.

Ditto to everything said here. Keep him inside during the day but if they have to be out never let him out without a full face/nose covered sun proof fly mask. SStack.com also has the 85% sunproof fly sheets if he burns on his body.

I always used kids sunscreen....lather up the face/nose then place a UV fly mask with nose on.

Zinc Oxide will work..  I had a horse for a few years that would sunburn his nose terribly.  This was the only thing that protected him while he was out grazing.  He was really good at removing fly masks.

^^ This works really well on my mare with a huge white blaze (not a bald face).

I slather it on every morning after feeding and haven't had issues since with sunburn. I also like using it as it will moisturize and help heal the previous sores if you have any.

There is some stuff called My Pony Sun Block made in Arizona that works really well.  It is easy to apply-kind of like putting on face powder but it doesn't come off when they drink.

Diaper rash ointment. I use the generic from the dollar store. Its mainly zinc oxide, which is the stoutest sunblock. Its water repellent and lasts. If you have a horse with dew poisoning on their face slather it on and it will soften the scabs and make the face soft as cotton.

I always used a strong (50+) SPF sunscreen and it seemed to do the trick. Whatever you use though I would try a small area to make sure they dont have a reaction to it. Def dont put anything around the eyes. I boat frequently and I know that if it runs it burns my eyes. Id put a fly mask on everyday for the eye area and sunscreen or something similar on the muzzle.
