Location: Sweet Home Alabama | Well I took my mare (AAA Special Effort mare) to the vet earlier this week to try to get her bred to ASOF.... got a phone call 2 days later saying she was "pooling urine". He said it wont hurt her but it'd more than likely would be a waste to even try. I was a little depressed (I've been saving money to breed her to him since last spring, but he filled up so quick), but I'm slowly getting over it. I've read its more common in older gals who have had a good bit of foals. Has anyone else had a mare do this? I'm curious to see if anyone has had any success breeding a mare like that? According to my vet, her breeding career is over

| It depends on severity. It is more common in older mares, we've had a few who pool sometimes. That said, we've been able to manage it, but we have good repro vets...really good ones.
Most of our mares are older (18, 20, 22, 23, 23) so we see a host of special little things :-)
If your vet routinely does repro and is good at it, then there is a strong probability that they are correct. If you have doubts, get her to a repro specialist and get another opinion.Β

She is 17 & had 7 foals. I trust this vet. Everybody I know trusts him. He bred her in 2012 & he bred another one of mine in 2013. I want to try but I dont want to waste time & $300 for shipping. So you've bred a few who've pooled & they still caught?

It depends on how much urine she's pooling. We have had success with a few who did, but they weren't severe.
If the vet is good and has her history, I'd trust him.
Nothing worse than shipping 2-3-4 times and not having a pregnancy!

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | I had one here last year that pooled urine and had surgery on her to correct it. It was a 12 year old mare that'd had several foals. She bred right away after the surgery and is still carrying the foal with no problem. Due any day now. The surgery was not real expensive either.
The problem with not fixing them and breeding them is that they are likely to abort later on. The heavier they get in foal the more the urine starts to pool. It can actually seep through the cervix and cause placentitis---which will result either in abortion or a "red bag" delivery where the placenta detaches before the foal comes out and the foal can suffocate during birth.
If your vet is willing to fix her or you can get her fixed somewhere else there's a good chance she will be fine to breed.

We've been looking into the surgery. It is wayyy cheaper than I thought it would be. So I'm gonna try that & pray that it works & she checks in foal.
