I am currently calling this a spider crack because I don't know what else to call it. He is "kicking" when I go to pick his feet out(which are done either every day or every other.) He acts like he wants to cow kick me but I think he knows better and won't. I have a sinking feeling this is a bigger deal then it appears. I noticed it about a week ago and I have an appointment on the 21st for a trim anyways- 8 weeks in the winter, 6 in the summer. I have soaked it and I really don't know what to do about it. I have already sent photos to my farrier and expect to hear back by morning.

has anyone ever seen a crack like this? Or dealt with one?

It looks superficial to me. Is there any heat in the hoof or any pain?

there is a slight temp difference around the cracked area. And he seems to be sore in the hind (which could also be a result from a quarter crack on the left hind we're handling right now) when I pick up the foot he acts like he doesn't want me to mess with it, acting like he wants to kick out, ears pinned. He's sassy, but acting like he wants to kick a person isn't in his nature. I was thinking it looks pretty superficial too. Maybe there is something going on higher up that's causing the attitude. I don't know.

It could be gravel or a abcess working it's way out.  Is he sore on the sole of his foot?

Mine has one like that but it goes higher up. I'm really worried that it might be white line disease. We pulled shoes a couple of months ago and we're transitioning to barefoot. I hope it's nothing to worry about (for both of us!!)

Not sore on the sole, just where the horizontal crack is. I'm hoping for an abscess and not a huge problem. I don't think I've ever hoped for an abscess before. haha
