| I am attaching two videos from yesterday. I really like my pattern but I want to know if there are exercises that folks to to get a horse to really fire out of the second. This gelding is 6 years old and sticks just shy of 16h so he is a big boy for these 14.0 patterns but i think he has more to give me. I am only 5'1", btw. The first go is just me, no spurs, no quirt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0YZs09hmFE The second go, I added a quirt (which explains the first barrel) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6_Es6nMUjA |

Location: Kansas | I see a couple different things. First video I don't think you were far enough past the barrel for him to keep his momentum going and leave it in one smooth move. He kind of had to hang up to avoid running the barrel over. Second run, I think he left it crossfiring which could indicate hind end soreness.....stifles or SI. I've got one coming off SI injections and another who I just noticed in our videos is dropping his lead on 2nd & 3rd so I may be headed down the lameness exam path again.....ugh.
When I've got one I know isn't sore, I like to do rollbacks to encourage them to hustle out of a turn. I'll trot along a fence, stop, and immediately ask for the rollback and SPEED coming out of it. |

Location: WYOMING | He is really neat and I think its just a timing position issue. He never really fires at any point in the run kinda keeping the same pace the whole time. IMHO leaning back with the quirt when you are already half way across the pen puts you off balance and out of position which effects him as well. He looks like he is starting that turn a smidge too soon which gives him no room on the backside to finish at the best angle to fire straight to #3. Because he is so close behind when he goes to finish he is finishing just a bit "pointed" in the wrong direction. If you can ride him a step or two further/straighter into #2 before you ask for turn that will force him to not close that well behind the barrel and will set him up for a better straighter exit. Since he is so turny you might be better to breeze him some during the week and get him feeling super good and concentrate on riding and driving with your body.
Nice pony!!! |

| If they are swapping leads in the back does indicate a,sorness issue, not firing out of a barrel if they are sore they cant it hurts. I been thru a 2 year battle to find a vet to find your sorness. He had fusing hocks on vet said he wasnot sore enough and i like thqt vet good enough to tell her just went back we went thru show her my videos vs a faster and slower horses, he would go any faster than he can handle his pain. Just had surgery to fuse his lower hocks, his feet are a little long but he is tracking and hitting his front feet, somehow i know he is better. This horse won a small futurtity but. 5 as a four year running a second off at small shows. we even untrasounded his rear suspensories and they where good checked front feet. I cant wait to get my horse back. Although the vet told me that he was too nice a mover to be a barrel horse, i wish he was a mare. my vets office visit was like 42.00 and lamness was like 84.00 if you just go get flexed and checked then you will have a good idea its something else, go to a lamness vet. |

| My horses would never fire in a little buliding like that. Our covered pens down here are open and airy feeling. You looked nice and smooth to me! Nice horse! |
