Wide Darn Open Posts: 2141	This is my first bout. Vet left about and hour and a half ago. She oiled her with water mixed in and gave her banamine. She seems more comfortable now but I've been walking her all this time and no poop. Vet said gut sounds were good but breathing and heart rate were very high. She rolled 4 times in the pasture before I caught her and called the vet. Should we keep walking?

Veteran Posts: 222 Location: Texas	We only walk if they are trying to roll or thrash. If she lays calm or stands leave her. I've been told of people walking horses into the ground bc they think the "have" to walk them. It's the rolling that you need to watch for. Good luck and prayers for your pony I hate colic :(

	If the vet left in peace I would think that the situation isn't too serious! I have had about 5 colics, each one took a decent amount of time to poop. Just don't let her eat, I would keep an eye on her if you don't want to walk her anymore so she doesn't lay down anymore. 2 years ago I spent a christmas eve walking two horses that coliced at the same time. It was a good time.

Warmblood with Wings Posts: 27846 Location: Florida..	if she isnt trying to roll you dont have to walk her.. they get exhausted.. let her rest peacefully but no rolling. the banamine will wear off.. when it does if she is painful Id call vet again. she may poop even if Impacted .. poop can be behind impaction.. if you have grass id let her nibble some. oil can take a day to move thru as well.. also she may be painful from heat cycles so something to consider.

I'm not opinionated Posts: 4597 Location: Online	I've had many bouts of gas colic. They will poop with gas colic. If she's relaxed and nibbling at grass, I would think she'll be ok. Just check on her every hour for a few hours.

If you have horrible weather, rain, snow, mud, thunderstorms- stay up all night and watch like a hawk. If it is a beautiful peaceful night- turn her out and check every few hours. I would guess if you turned her out near the usual watering area- waiting and watching to see if she takes initiative to take a drink would be a good sign. Good luck with her. I know it is stressful. Mine picked our coldest day of the year to have an episode.

Expert Posts: 3514	Personally I wouldn't turn her out. I would take her out to eat grass every hour or so Let her nibble for about 30 minutes. Then out her back up. I had a mare that coliced. The vet told me to keep her in round pen and every couple of hours take her out to eat grass. Give her a little hay. Make sure she is drinking.

Elite Veteran Posts: 999 Location: Sunny So Cal	Just keep a watchful eye and see if there is any changes. Glad she pooped! But walking is only really good if they are trying to roll. The more you walk them the more tired they become. Therefore if you needed to do surgery they may be too tired and won't make it through. Just for next time. Walking can be helpful but also harmful. Also I keep THE Colic Rescue on hand. It lets me know if it something more serious than gas or a mild impaction. My horses are always better within 30 minutes. Good to have in case the vet can't make it out right away.

It can take 24 hours for the oil to work through also......if she doesn't need any more pain meds after about 6 to 8 hours that usually means things are back to normal.......but like Bibs said is she starts showing pain again.......CALL VET! I usually don't start back regular feeding till I see some good poop....

Wide Darn Open Posts: 2141	Thanks guys I wish I'd known I didn't have to walk her that much...I was exhausted and she was over it and trying to go black out to the pasture. This morning at 6:00 she was picking grass and looked fine and at 4:30 this evening she was running around and playing so I believe she's over it. Wasnt sweating or labored breathing like last might. She's boarded about 30 minutes from my house and I'm wondering if I should go back out again tonight and check on her.
