Location: Muskogee, OK | This is completely non horse related but figured some others may have had issues with this and could add some insight.
Since moving to my new house a few years ago, I have gotten COUNTLESS damages to tires from random objects (nails, screws, staples, etc.) picked up on what I am assuming is the rural road I live off of. It always seems to happen soon after the road is grated, but either way happens far too often. I usually catch it before the tire is flat and can get it repaired---but it is getting kind of ridiculous.
Is there anything to do about this? If I contacted the county do they even care? Will they send any sort of truck with a magnet out to help at all (do those even exist?)? Or is this just a risk that goes along with living off of a dirt road? Is this something that I should bring up to my land-lord?
I'm about ready to pull my hair out over it! The last casualty was a very new tire that got a nail in the "non repairable" portion. It gets pretty dang expensive for a poor vet student like me to be replacing truck tires all of the time. I have been sure to get road hazard insurance on every new tire I buy which helps...but it's still a never ending problem it seems.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated! I am thinking this is more of a tough luck kind of thing.. But if anyone has had success in the past with any sort of solution, I am open ears! |

It is a county issue if it is anyones' issue really. Most likely, they will laugh and regrade the road if anything at all.
Up in rural SD, we had what we called townships that were rural areas that were run by the people that lived there independent of the county or towns/cities. In the townships, each had a road grader that you could call to fix things. It cut down on the large counties having to supply equipment, man hours, and extras during snowstorms. Often, the townships would share equipment to help with costs. I'm not familiar with OK but you all might have something like that? maybe? |

That is about where I am at right now. Getting a little ridiculous! I guess that comes with the territory----and I do love where I live. Just not the flat tires :) |

I don't know if they still have the option.. but we used to get tires with more plys than normal. They ride a tiny bit rougher but it helps on roads like that... I lived on one for 40 years before we put up the money to get a chip&seal done. |

Location: Bandera, TX | I'm known among my friends as the Queen of Flat Tires. I feel your pain. I have picked up every sharp object on the road within my county. And if it is not that then I have tires falling apart on me. Now mind you I am very anal when it comes to tire maintenance and constantly check pressure, etc.
I just spent $160 on a new trailer tire earlier this week.... |

Location: Texas | We get all of our tires from discount tire and get the road hazzard warrenty. They replace all flats they can't fix for free!! Even flats from catus and other vegetation my husband runs over in the pasture. It has been a life saver. |

We used to have problems with certain tires as they would get flats easier than others. Same ply, size, etc, but the Uniroyal tires were problematic. More plys would help as would max psi.

I get all of mine from Direct Discount Tire (not sure if this is the same company?) and get the road hazard warranty as well. Definitely has come in handy and I wont buy another tire without it! However, here they wont replace all flats that they cant fix for free. It is free up to a certain amount of tread, and then after that it is pro-rated. |

I definitely feel your pain... The one earlier this week ended up costing me $170 after the road hazard warranty discount. I am very anal as well, always checing tire pressure and constantly keeping up with rotating, etc. It just kills me! |

Location: Oklahoma | Payne County would probably laugh. A few years ago we used to have a Discount Tire in Stillwater over by Boomer Lake. Even since they closed, I go to OKC and buy tires there. If you purchase their road hazard plan, they will repair any flats for free, and if it is un-repairable, less than three years old, and has at least the legal amount of tread, they will completely replace it with a brand new one for free. The reason I go out of my way to them is because they have a lot of stores around OK, TX, ect., and any store will honor it, so if you're on the road and get a flat, its not a huge deal to swap the spare and then find a store along the way to get it fixed. I always seem to get screws or nails in my trailer tires for some reason, so its a great plan for that, since it goes up to three years, and you don't get quite as much tread wear as fast on those.
