Hughes County Jail

By: Jeri Thomas ([email protected])

PIERRE, S.D. – (DRG News) A Fort Pierre man who was scheduled to be sentenced today for violating probation on a Stanley County charge of animal mistreatment from 2009 and for separate charges from Hughes County was transported to the hospital yesterday after jailers found him hanging from a bed sheet in his cell. A statement on 27-year-old Flint Dahl from Hughes County Sheriff Mike Leidholt indicates that corrections officers at the Hughes County Jail found Dahl at 2:15 p.m. yesterday. The statement goes on to say that emergency medical measures began immediately including CPR and all available lifesaving efforts. Dahl was transported to Avera St. Mary’s Hospital where he was stabilized and transported to Avera McKennan Hospital where he remains in critical condition. Leidholt says Dahl was in custody for probation violations relating to Hughes County charges of DUI 1st, Boating Under the Influence and Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was also facing probation violations from Stanley County on charges that included Inhumane Treatment of an Animal for an incident involving a rodeo horse during the Fourth of July Rodeo in 2009 and Reckless Driving. Leidholt says the investigation into this incident is continuing and is being conducted by the SD Division of Criminal Investigation.

Wow!! Clearly this guy had issues back when he did such a cruel horrible thing to Dually. However, he still has major issues that he apparently never got help with. Seems like this kid has had a screwed up life for a long time. He not only screwed up his own life, but, has hurt others in the process. Very sad for everyone who has had to be involved with him

The really sad part is that this young man didn't get the help that he needed long before his conviction of his abuse of Dually. His father continually had bought his way out of trouble instead of letting him face the consequences of his behavior.

He was in court on the 15th for violating probation.  The judge told them to lock him up.  The TV cameras were rolling as they loaded him in the van and he made sick comments about being a horse killer and hollared profanity at the television crew.  Nice guy.  Its on the KELOLand website or you can google Flint Dahl.

Honestly I think Flint's dad would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. I've lived in this town my whole life and never heard anything bad about his dad. In fact it's known if you need something from his store and you can't afford it he's going to let you take it with nothing more than a note on a scrap of paper. His mom is a very hard working quiet lady. I think he has just always bailed Flint out of everything.

Sometimes, people are just born broken. It doesn't matter how good a job the parents do raising them.... if something is wrong mentally, the good raising doesn't stick.

I don't know these folks, but I feel for the family. I have seen similar situations. Throw drugs or booze in the mix and it changes a person, too.

I'm not sad to see this person be gone from the planet, but I do feel very badly for his family who I'm sure cared for him despite the horrible things he had done. All around just a sad situation.

Alcohol was a huge factor. I didn't know Flint before this but I saw him come out of the bar around noon with a mixed drink in his hand. He was riding around all afternoon.  I assumed he had ridden in the parade but I later found out he was just riding someone else's horse who had been in the parade. I just saw him for a moment when he got on and rode away but he was very polite and light with this horse.  Then the next morning I heard about Dually and was just sickened.

I was sickened when I first read about Dually and even more so as I followed the tragic story. How can anyone be called human who did this? I am, however, also a parent and I try to support my children as well so my sincere thoughts go out to those parents as they suffer their loss. Horses are our children too and do not deserve what happened to Dually. What goes around comes around and a guilty conscience must have been too much.
