Location: NC | I'll have my animal science degree at the end of this summer. But I want to take it another step further. The only school that offer animal science is NC State and I just can't afford to drive the distance 5 days a week. There's another university a lot closer and they offer Ag Education and Agribusiness. I'm debating on what would be best. I'm thinking a business degree, ag or not, would go farther than an education degree. But the ed degree covers a lot more ag related topics. But it doesn't seem to be a great time to be in education.
Just trying to get an idea of what area is best for the future. |

Location: ND--it snows, it floods, it snows, it floods | I would look at AgriBusiness. Agriculture is booming right now and there is a shortage of QUALIFIED individuals in this marketplace....that and I could never be a teacher and kudos to those that do. |

Location: Oklahoma | An AgEd degree is great if you want to get into teaching or work in an extension program. However, even here in Oklahoma, AgEd programs in high schools are the first to be cut. There is a high need and demand for ag teachers, but those positions are dwindling.
It sounds like the AgBusiness degree will give you more of what you're looking for in a career.

But if your concentration would be agriculture, I would recommend Agribusiness.
Not saying you wouldn't enjoy teaching, it would likely be harder to find a job.
I would contact some schools near by and gather some information on what those teachers are paid and how often job openings occur before you make a decision. All salary for public teachers is usually posted somewhere on the district websites...usually called salary schedule. You can Google local districts and then poke around to find that information. |

NC is one of the worst as far as teacher pay. I know it's a little different with ag teachers, but I wouldn't think it would be a world of difference.
I know with the business degree, there are a lot of opportunities, even outside of Ag. Even if it isn't my ultimate first choice, I think it would be the smartest.

| You are correct! Normally a "teacher" is contracted for 187 days, an Ag teacher is 200 something days (maybe 220?). BUT, you get every holiday off...for the most part, and I never work a day in my life, that is how much I love teaching.
I guess I just feel like a lot of people are negative about the education field....and although there is a lot going on in education there are still people out there who make decent money and love what they do...me being one of them, so don't let stereotypes scare you away from what you may truly love doing is all I am recommending. That's what my instructor said. That they have a different kind of contract. I wasn't sure the exact details though.
I like educating people that actually care about learning. I've done several labs out here with different classes and I really enjoyed it. The ones who WANT to learn are just great. They ask a million questions and are truly interested. But the other ones can be frustrating. And the stipulations that the college instructors sometimes have is ridiculous. A certain number of students has to be retained or they are hit, a certain number have to pass or you look bad. etc. It isn't about quality, more like quantity.
Kind of a mixed deal I guess. But I have seen openings for high schools asking for ag teachers. It's an elective, so most of the kids in the program WANT to learn. |
