I have a 13 year old seasoned barrel mare, that has decided stopping after a run is not going to happen easily.
I have been running her in a dogbone mouthpiece gag bit, this is no longer doing it, I am working her in small circles and working on stopping, but she really has no whoa anymore coming out of the arena, suggestions as to what kind of bit to switch to, to get some control back now. and we will continue to work at home on stopping in the arena and more control. Thanks for any suggestions

Try to find the same bit just with a different mouth piece. twisted wire or smooth mouth. add a curb chain if you don't have one already. I always try to make small changes before changing head gear completely.

Clean bill of health?
Jw, I've had much better luck stopping my boy with minimal pressue now that now hocks don't hurt. It's interesting all the little things that pain can cause that we don't even think about.
