Ok, I board my two horses. A mare and a gelding. Our facility is very nice when my horses have grass. Right now, mine are in a 1/2 acre run with basically weeds, no grass, and miserable. The two large planted grass pastures are, obviously, separated but can be accessed by an uncut 2yo stud colt that the owners refuse to cut and tends to be a houdini. Is there some sort of birth control for mares that I don't know about? So I don't have to worry about her being exposed to a heinz 57 stud colt? Depo shots? Marble? Isn't there some sort of thing with a suture? Do any of these act as contraceptives or just keep the mare from cycling? Help!

Could you move to a differnt place? Or talk to the owner of the barn and ask them why there is a stud running around the place.

This facility is the nicest in our area.. I really have very few places I could go. The stud belongs to the barn owners.

ETA: The little stud is their baby that does no wrong and they don't believe that the boarders have seen him mounting other mares

Oh no, lol... well i guess there's not much you can say then. As far as birth control, I think your pretty much out of luck if this colt is running around with your's. I would just keep her in a different area so he cant get to her.

Yes. It's called 'GELDING'...

Makes more sense to unload a gun than to shoot at a bullet proof vest.

Aaaand that's what I needed to hear. Ugh. I guess I have some big plans to make. I'm new to the whole adult thing and I'm not a huge fan of having to pay for others mistakes. But, if I'm ever in the same situation in the future, I'll know the position that it puts others in and hopefully react accordingly.

I can't remember the name of it, but I know the BLM implants a lot of the wild mares with a form of porcine birth control. But like others have said, your options are moving or getting Heinz 57 gelded.

I wasn't going to reply but guess I will.....ask your vet. I asked ours ifthere was anything we could do and he said he gives the mares Synovex (?) the same stuff they use in heifers in a feedlot to keep them from cycling. He said if I decided to go this route to bring my mare when she is cycling so he could ultrasound her ovaries to make sure they are healthy and then he would implant her....all this for $40 and she would not cycle for 4 months.

you use synovex s its the steer version of it. I gave it to my mare last year when I got her and it lasted all year and now I need to do it again. I had to give her more then the vets recommend. I gave her 24 pellets but she horses horribly. Vets will tell you to do it surgically under their mane but if you are familiar with giving implants to cattle you can do it yourself. We are used to giving it so we put it in her chest muscle.

I'm sorry. If you have to put her on birth control of any kind, I'd submit an invoice for the vet bill with your board check and reduce by the amount of the bill.

RIDICULOUS.

I would be looking for another place to board my horses, if the owners are letting this stud have the run of the place its not a safe place to be boarding at for human are horses.
