Location: Gods country | At some point in August, unsure yet on exact date, I will be packing my bags from my Ol' Kentucky Home and heading to the big state of Cali (Yikes!!). I just graduated College in Imaging Sciences (x-ray and Ultrasound), and I will start turning in my resume at various places this summer.
Anyway, am currently looking for a place to live within an hour of either of these three cities
Sacramento
San Francisco
L.A.
I have looked on various rental websites for apartments, one bedroom houses, rooms for rent, etcβ¦
However, I was hoping my BHW family could maybe help me out a bit. My ideal setup would be to rent out a room on a horse farm! Will pay board for one horse, or possibly trade board for barn help or horse help. I can work horses, help break out the prospects, clean stalls, basically anything. I can mow, weed eat, fix fence⦠etc.
I have references, and a Clean rental history!
Please message me if you know anyone with a room to rent out!
Thanks BHW!!! |

Location: California | I manage a boarding facility in Pacifica, CA (15-20 minutes south of San Francisco on the coast). It's called Millwood Ranch and you can go to the website and contact the owner Millard. He may have some rental spaces on the property but we don't need any additional help at this time. Board is reasonable. You will find that board rates are crazy in the Bay Area as well as rent. Call Millard and tell him Nona sent you. |

Location: CA | I grew up in Sonoma County and now live in Sacramento. It will be the least expensive place to live and it is pretty densely populated so you should be able to find a job. I have only lived in Sac since last January. Barns are more spread out here, since there is less open space. Where I'm from there are barns everywhere you turn. When I was looking for a barn it was hard! Everything was higher end and out of my price range or it was a shanty town in someones back yard with no arena. But I imagine LA and I know San Fran will be alot more expensive and is more city with less open land for boarding.
The central valley or northern Ca more along the coast (marin county, sonoma county, napa county) are a nice balance between city and open land and its not crazy expenisve. If you head farther north like Lake county or even the redding area its more rural but that is to far north for my taste. LOL

Location: South of Canada and North of Mexico | Im not much help but my husband is working just outside of San Francisco in Half Moon Bay and RV lot rent is CRAZY high, double the price we have paid anywhere else. My SIL is house hunting looking for a place to rent as it looks like they will also be there for a while and sticker shock is an understatement to say the least, and when something reasonable pops up its gone FAST. |

Location: Where I am happiest | I love the Redding area! Tons, of barrel races. You can hit a race almost every day of the week + rodeo's and housing costs are MUCH better then any where south.Alot more horse friendly. Plus, it is beautifull country right under Mount Shasta and Shasta Lake. |

My board in Pacifica is $400 with a shelter and large paddock. Over the hill from us the facility wants $550 for a stall with no paddock. Crazy. We live in Moss Beach but chose to keep my horse at a no drama barn. |

Location: California | I'm more familiar with the Sacramento area (I live about an hour north of Sac), so I would say to look into the Woodland, Vacaville, Dixon, Yuba City, Lincoln areas. Those are just some surrounding towns that would be within an hour commute to Sacramento. |

That doesnt seem bad, here at home (northern MN inside board with turnout is $375) Im not bringing any horses or animals with me, Im flying out with the two kids on the 4th to visit, but am surprised horse boarding isnt to high. RV lot rent is $1200 a month, so glad we got our camper paid off last fall. Agh. |

Are you talking about MREC? I love that place. I tried to convince my husband to move over that way so I could move my horses there. |

We have a mobile home at Pillar Ridge and pay $1200 for our spot. Nuts! |

One thing is you can't beat the fishing and the beaches here. There is a public pier in Princeton where you can catch rock fish and crabs. Rate of pay is higher here but so is property. If you have an RV, you might want to talk to Millard who owns the ranch. He has some people living on the property who RV and I'm sure he would be way cheaper than other places. |

Location: California | Yes, MREC in Lincoln is fabulous! We also have a bunch of races in Woodland at Sugarland Horse Park which is also a nice boarding facility (www.sugarlandhorsepark.com). There are a lot of options in the Woodland/Davis/Vacaville area outside of Sac. Davis will be the most expensive of the three because of the university. Also, you have to be really careful in the Rio Linda/Elverta area. There are a lot of barns in that area, but some of the people are pretty shady. Sac is your best bet for proximity of races. You're right at the intersection of two major interstates and there is a lot going on. Oh and we have the most beautiful summer evenings as well! |

Common Sense and then some
Location: So. California | Depending upon where you land, there should be a ton of options for you to consider. California is a BIG state and rent really depends upon upon the community you land in. The weather is good from the southern tip to the northern reaches and there are a ton of races up and down the state, you'll have plenty to do! And, there is riding on the beach...
Good luck in your job search!!! |

| There are some really good sized races in Corning and Redbluff, however there is also TOUGH competetion. Redbluff is about 2 hours away from Sacramento give or take. If I were you I would try to live as north as possible. Much more pasture space and cost of living is lower. |
