Location: Opelousas, LA | I have a horse that will be catching a ride (almost 600 miles) with someone who will be going that way with his own horses. What would be a fair amount to pay for the ride? He just said to pay him whatever is fair. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | Well pull up a GPS map, figure out mileage and gas prices. You should at very minimum pay a percentage of gas based on how many horses are in the trailer. For instance, if there are three and two are his, 1/3 gas. But then I would also consider stopping. If he's pulling them out of the trailer and walking them, he should be paid for his time. I would also pay at least some of his meals or hotel. Throw in a bit extra for effort. I know we calculated to haul a horse to MT from TX recently as being $1000 in expenses round trip (hotel, gas, meals) but most haulers wanted $1500-2000 depending on their stops and horses in the trailer. |

Location: Never in one place long | $200? I hauled a horse from Southern Kansas to Southern Michigan for $200 just to help someone out. It was an inconveinence but I wanted to help her and made $150 so I was ok with that |

Location: Buffalo, TX | You can figure if he gets 10 MPG that going 600 miles, he will use 60 gallons of diesel...around here it's $3.60x60 = $216 that it will cost him, so I would probably give him $200...that pays most of his fuel and some for the trouble because you just have 1 horse. A hauler would charge you at least 4 times that much. |

Location: Opelousas, LA | For a truck that gets 12mpg and fuel at $3.75, that would only be about $188. Don't the haulers charge $1 per loaded mile?
I may try to hit somewhere in between those two prices, I don't want him to think I am being cheap, lol. |

Ditto. I think this is fair. |

Location: Up and over to the right | Holy hot tamale! I'm at $4.50+ a gallon/diesel. People around me charge $1.25/loaded mile with their pick ups and quite a bit more for a semi. |

I agree. When we haul, my horses or anyone elses, we stop for potty breaks and/or fuel every 3-4 hrs. Rarely can I go a whole 4 hrs. When we stop, I untie every horse, offer water, check hay bags and look them over. |

Having that extra horse is alot more work then some would think . I would be helping to pay for fuel, buy him lunch and give a little extra for the kindness out of his heart for doing this for you. |
