| What do you do for you broodmares that are hard to keep weight on, nearly impossible with a foal on their side.
I got a free trail from Nutrena and it's not really working.
She's currently getting 14#-15# of Nutrena Pro Force Fiber, Empower Balance, Muscle Mass, plus lots of beet pulp and O/A.
I'm just at a complete loss on putting weight on her, this is hardly maintaing her weight. |

| Tough to do on older mares. I'm assuming this is your Special Elan mare. I would add alfalfa if not already doing so, maybe even free choice. |

I have done free choice alfalfa ton bales in the past and it worked really well on the old mares. |

Yes. She is older and I know it gets harder but seems I can not get it on her (I can't wait to wean that baby, I know that has a lot to do with it.)
She's definitely put on weight since I got her, but she isn't at the weight I'd like to see her at. She's not unhealthy, the vets tell me to stop worrying about it but all my horses have a bit of weight on them except her, and it just bugs me.
I did free choice alfalfa blocks (quality isn't so easy, we get we get in Florida, but they were pretty good) for a month and saw NO change in her weight. |

I'm not sure if we can get Blue Bonnet down here?
I've had her tested for worms and she's on ulcer preventives. I think I might try the FORCO. |

Just remember what ever you do to the inside of a horse, it usually (not all, but the majority) takes 60-90 days to see it on the outside.. so don't give up after 30 days. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | Nothing has put weight on one for me like the ultium did. I fed my gelding three times a day on this stuff when he lost weight from his EPM. He came back fast.
Edited: It was ultium not ultium growth, though that's great for colts and can be fed to broodmares while they are lactating.

| I have a nurse mare that came to us very very thin. I mean, she was horrible. We feed her at least 3 large feedings of hay each day. Two of those feedings are alfalfa, the other is either alfalfa or grass (we're rationing the grass since we're almost out). She also gets about 2 1/2 - 3lbs of Omolene 300 twice daily. This mare is putting on weight nicely even though she's nursing a foal. As soon as our babies are ready they will head out to the grass pasture where they will have access to protein tubs.
I think that your best bet in a situation like this is lots of good, quality forage. Alfalfa or another type of hay with high protein or good pasture does best for adding weight. If you're stalling and feeding grain, you could add some kind of oil just to increase the fat in her diet. |
