So will an insurance company typically cover OCD surgery? I've only had the horse insured for a couple weeks and went to get his maintaince injections. Long story short found OCDs in his stifles. Obviously I just found out about them but would the insurance company cover that? I have major medical on him. Or are they going to say even tho I didn't know about it that is pre existing?

you should be fine. Vet will have to file a report and as long as they say they just found it, you should be covered.

Since your horse has been having maintenance injections, I don't see any reason why the insurance company would cover it. .. especially if they ask for his previous medical history from your vet.

OCD is the primary reason a horse starts getting injections is to mask the pain and inflammation while the cartilage continues to deteriorate and turn into long term arthritis..... this masking affect allows horse to operate at a higher level while continuing to destroy the joint and eventually ending his working life just about the time he gets really good at his job.

I think if you read the fine print in the insurance policy you will find some time waiting periods before you can file on certain things. .. It is tuff for me to discern that an insurance company would write a $1000 premium and then get stuck with a $3000 surgery bill. ....

This is an excellent article by CSU but as you can see they rely on a broad statement of young horses being more OCD prevalent without going into feeding program, mishandling (too much stall time) along with forced exercising in round pens and the like. Nor do they deal with working an older horse to max while not being in condition to withstand the acute training and damaging their flat cartilage in a joint.

Very good information to know and understand when you own a horse with OCD ...

Also in every case should OCDs be removed? I know there is no other cure but can the surgery potentially be worse than the actual OCD in the joint? I will know more soon when I go to a different vet but just curious of your guys opinions.
