Looking for any pros/cons or general feedback between elephant or alligator hide.  I've narrowed down all the features for ordering a new saddle, except for the seat.

I prefer gator.  Which I have in my Caldwell.

I don't like the thought of elephants being used, as you cannot control where the hides come from and a lot of it is from poaching.

I LOVED my elephant seat. It is so durable and comfortable. If you like to wear the jeans with all the bling, stones, etc. - get the elephant. The croc seats get messed up quick.

Depends on the maker. A lot of them will certify that their exotic uses come from responsible sources and we're harvested from animals that died of old age or were legally thinned for population management.

Off the top of my head I don't recall which brand had a page about that, but it was a concern of mine as well when I was looking at exotic hides.

Thank you! That was one of the pages I read for sure.

I think its a fair question to ask a maker.

I LOVE my elephant. It is very durable, doesn't scratch, and holds up well. Even though I liked the look of croc better, I went with the elephant because it will last longer. Most companies will tell you that the croc will flake and come apart. It does not wear well. The company told me of I wanted a croc seat the only way they really recommed it if you do the bicycle inlaid type seating, not the full seat.

My Crown C has a bicycle inlaid elephant seat... I love it!  I was worried that my aluminum stirrups would scratch it up (I can be pretty rough with things if I'm a big hurry... and normally I am!), but so far it's holding up very nicely.  I stopped wearing blingy pants, so I can't comment on if those would scratch it or not!
