| So let me begin by saying last fall this horse was trotting a bit "off" so i suspected that she had pulled something.. so it was the end of the season so i went ahead and gave her about 8 months off. this spring she was riding great. I thought she might be moving a bit funny but no one else saw it but me... and she only does it in an arena(kindof short stepping) but when i take her out to a field to work she moves great so i didn't think too much of it.
I rode her Sunday just 20 mins at a extended trot and 10 mins at a lope in the arena. she was moving really good and striding out. this morning walk out to the barn to find this... There wasn't any heat in it... i pushed and prodded and it dont seem to be hurting her cuz she is a drama queen and would def let me know... I went ahead and cold hosed it and poulticed it and left her in the barn for the day (she usually get kept up at night and let out during the day)
Any ideas?

Location: North Dakota | Have you checked it over closely for any cuts or puncture wounds? Even something very very tiny can cause swelling so make sure to look it over closely. Is she sounds on it? |

| No heat in the leg...
I forgot to add i walked her for 10 mins to see if it would go down. she is competely sound at a walk.... i didn't try any more speed
ETA no woulds visisble... i examined it pretty good and squeezed along the swollen area and got absolutely no reaction from my mare... she was also in a stall so the chances of a would are still possible but much slimmer.

Was the arena hard at all? Could it just be from the pounding from your good work-out the day before? |

| Yea its pretty hard the tractors are all out in the field farming so we havent been able to work it. that would cause just one to swell like that? |

| In that case I'd ice it and then DMSO it under a nice firm pillow wrap topped by a polo wrap overnight. If the swelling returns after a few sessions I'd get it checked without fail. Sometimes their legs fill like this during legging up, it's a natural compensatory reaction to stress and they just need a few days to recover. Sometimes the suspensories are compromised and are causing the swelling and need diagnosis and appropriate treatment. |

| thank you very much for the help! I had her legged up good but then farming season hit so she was off for about a week or two and i had lunged her here and there inbetween but not a acutal good workout like yesterday's was....
If it dont clear up soon i will take off work to haul her but i always try to fix the little stuff myself first if possible.
If her suspensories are compromised what will treatment be? turnout? |

| Treatment on suspensories depends on how much you want to spend and how extensive the injury is, and it's location. Bare minimum is months of stall rest with hand walking, then a strict excercise schedule.
If she was short stepping in deep dirt, I would be super suspicious about suspensories. (Omg! Say that five times fast :) )
A lot of the time, horses with suspensory injuries aren't noticeably lame, makes then tough to diagnose. They just struggle with the clock, also with deep ground. :|

Location: North Dakota | I am kind of in the same boat as you. My horse came in Saturday missing a shoe on one front and the other front had a swelling on the outside above her fetlock. Right now I am cold hosing a few times a day, putting Sore No More on it, and wrapping with BOT quick wraps. I am going to monitor her for a few days hoping it is just a bruise and nothing major! If swelling isn't down by tomorrow I am bringing her in to have it ultrasounded. I have had nothing but tough luck this year and I am not sure how much more bad news I can take. |

Oh girl I feel for ya! I have 5 finished horses and not a single one is 100% sound!! Two are being leased out and one has an arthritic knee but the girl leasing her keeps her maintenance up and she is staying sound enough to run and still clock 1D. The other mare that is leased (by the same girl) came up lame after a run so we had her xrayed...oh she has navicular and possible signs of laminities! The mare that I have been able to compete on this year was diagnosed with bone spurs in her front feet two years ago so that is a never ending maintenance issue, then my good gelding has stifle issues that flair up now and then. He is hard to keep 100% sound on those stifles. He has good days and bad days no matter how in shape he is. Then my good mare (the one I posted about above) also has stifle issues so I really took my time getting her conditioned this spring and blistered her stifle on Monday and was going to enter my first run of the year on her on Sunday and well when I went to catch her Saturday I noticed the missing shoe and swelling......AWESOME! Why not? I just don't understand why....I feel I take great care of my horses....good feed, farrier apts every 6 wks (sometimes 5wks) for some and 8 wks for others, I keep them well conditioned, I cool them down plenty, we do TONS of trail riding every week, my pasture is kept up and fairly clean, I have great fence, etc. It is just stupid stuff that I feel I have little to no control over but yet it happens to my horses. The two chronic ones (the navicular and bone spur) make me the most upset. Some people don't have any horses with lameness issues but yet I get stuck with a barn full! Sorry I just had to vent. This last injury just really put me in a pity party mood...lol.

O wow!! I really feel for you!! I fortunately haven't had anything yet that i've thought has been career ending! i better knock on some wood before i jinx myself... yep i was gonna enter race this weekend... had #3 loose a shoe yesterday and my #2 horse this one swelled up... #4 is arthtritic and i dont run anymore... that leaves only my old 23 year old mare that hasn't ran since last year... hmm.... not looking good for hitting a show this weekend either! o to boot my farrier is on vacation!!
Sometimes with all these downs it makes you wonder why we love this sport so darn much!?!?! |
