I don't switch reins I switch the whole bridle. I like the change I feel it lets my horse know it's time to compete. I'll sometimes trail ride with a hack and run in what ever bit that horse needs. Or I'll have a similar bit on a different headstall but have it sit just a little different in his mouth.
The length of rein is like some one already posted on here. Shorten them until you are not fighting them. If the get too short like one poster said I'd put a littl string or rubberband on them where I could put it around my horn for when your just standing around.
I'm in the process of building more complete bridles....oh darn, more shopping.

Do you ride with them longer when you are just schooling, no pattern, at home? Maybe I just need two sets of reins.
Yes, I use several different sets of reins depending on what I'm doing and what horse I'm riding.

I guess I'm the weirdo here...although my dad got after me for it, I always run my horse in pretty darn long reins. But those are the reins I've ran 19 second pole runs in and my smoothest, fastest
(top of 1D
) barrel runs in, so my dad is now fine with it.

Years ago, I ran a horse with a very SHORT neck and a very LONG head - his racing reins could barley be pulled over his head, they were that short!
