A neighbor wants me to train a couple of her horses. I cannot bring them to my house because they are mares. The women would rather them stay at her house. She does have facilities for the training so that is not a concern. She's about 6 miles away with 2 that need training now, and some mini's that need some ground manners.

Should I just charge "X" amount per horse per month with driving time  included.(20 days of working/riding) Or do you think would be better to charge her by the day/week, and add the driving time.

I thought maybe say like $20/per horse per day and $10 for going to her house.
Or should I just say $25/ per horse per day? And take the hit on gas if I only do one horse once in awhile?

AND do you all think that is a fair rate for both of us.

eta: miss spelling

I'd say anywhere between $15 - $25 is fair.  That would be $450 - $750 per month if doing 30 days.  $15 would obviously be pretty dang cheap, but you said you aren't claiming to be a pro.

Since they are paying feed, hay, and have the facilities I think you should consider that in determining what would be fair. Most local and non pro people charge around 450-550 a month (estimating around 30 rides) BUT that is with them taking care of the feed, bedding, and daily care. You are just coming to ride/train and your using their facilities.

In my experience, to really get anywhere starting a horse, it needs consistent riding 5-6 days a week for the first 30 days of training. Just riding 1-2x a week just feels like you spend so much of the session repeating what you did last time. Or getting the "fresh" out of them.

For that reason, I always charge by the month. So I feel obligated to be out there nearly every day. If you charge by the day, you open it up for either you or the owner to say "well, not today, (insert reason/excuse here)." way more often than is probably good for the horse.

I just know I can get SOOOO much more done with consistent riding for 30 days, then sporadic riding for 90. But maybe after the first 30, where you've got a good start on the horses it would work out great for both of you to pay per ride.

6-8 miles away (my truck sucks gas) and I really don't know her so not like a friend just happened into her while helping my farrier one day. I really want to be "fair" to both of us.

I agree with what was mentioned about your costs.  I would not look at what other trainers and horseman charge for training as a basis for what you would charge.  There is a lot more overhead involved when you are caring for and housing the horses in training.  in my area, I know several vey talented and knowledgeable vet students and recent college grads who get about $10 - 15 per ride per horse. You fuel or travel cost is built into that fee.

"neighbor" implies they live close.... Charging for gas seems.....well.... never mind..

Β Where I live, "neighbor" means within 60 miles or so. Is say to charge x amount for travel time, and x amount per horse... For example, $20 hr travel time and $25 power horse, adjusted to whatever it costs you to drive there and back, and whatever you charge. I charge and pay $25/horse (sometimes I'm the customer, sometimes the provider ... Just depends on the day lol)

Charge $25 per horse you will be lucky to see that/those horses 10 times in a month. Trust me it isn't convenient for the owner....bla bla bla.

If this is the case Komet I have NO neighbors!! I don't have any that are that close to where I live. they all about 1/2 mile or further. Even as the crow flies.

I charge $30 a ride. For tune ups for many reason. 1. If the owner is to scared to ride their own horse and I am possible putting my life on the line to step up on your horse then you pay.2. I am $15 cheaper then everyone else in my area.3. I have put 15 year into leaning how to train horse and my knowledge is worth something.I don't mean to sound rude..... but I have been hurt by a few back yard pets that just needed "a little time". Their owners raerly volentire to pay medical bills.Plus if you have them for 30 its a money in your pocket if they don't want that it takes more work because the owner can just call ans say sorry not today and you may loss a whole weeks worth of training.
