Those of you who own Stallions and ship semen to canada can you tell me about it?

What are the costs? What all needs done on your end.

I understand the shipping (via fed Ex I am told is the best)
what about a "health certificate" I enquired about a stallion and was told I needed to pay his health certifacate at $400 can you explain what that is to me?

Anything else I dont know about?

Stud fee + colection + shipping + my vet fee = little cute baby :-) that about right??

Does the stallion need any special testing to ship over the boarder?

I don't understand the $400 health certificate. I imagine his semen would need tested for disease etc, and within a certain time frame of shipping over the border, but that sounds steep.

With my past experience with shipping semen, I wouldn't even try it. I have had no luck shipping from stallions several states away. Either the airline lost it, Fed Ex didn't hold it when they should have so we chased them around their route trying to track it down, etc etc.

I hauled my mare to Sturgis SD to one of the better repro vets in the area and shipped semen on a stallion also from SD. First time in several attempts it all went well and I ended up with a mare in foal.

I have shipped to Canada,  on 2 different studs.  Our  vet had to do some paperwork on them that had to be sent to the Federal vet and it had to be stamped/sealed and sent along with several other documents (including copies of our contracts) with the shipment to Canada.  We were shipping cooled fresh semen.  We shipped it via FedEx overnight just like we do in the States, the only difference was all of the extra paperwork that had to be done.   I'd say it took about a week to get all of the paperwork in order but the client we shipped to was actually a veterinarian himself so he was very helpful on putting a checklist in order for us, on what all we'd need to have.

You also have to apply for a semen import permit for your mare, stallion owner has to get a permit for semen shipment, there are a few things a vet who is overseeing the stallion collection has to sign off on, semen has to be couriered up to the usda office and then sent on to fed ex.  There are a few fees involved in all of this and then the fed ex shipping and import paper work..  It all takes quite a bit of time on the stallions side depending how far you live from a usda vet office... We have to charge about $600.00 for the shipment to cover all the time and travel involved.. then you hope it gets through customs on time.. :)

So, are y'all sending frozen or cooled semen? Would it be a good idea to send frozen ahead of time in case cooled didn't get there on time?

One can send frozen but we prefer to send cooled fresh.  The containers for frozen are more expensive to purchase and more expensive to ship.
Frozen semen is generally not as easy for most vets to handle unless they've had a lot of experience with it.  It requires more mare ultrasounds, better timing on the insemination, and an entirely different protocol than cooled fresh.  Some vets don't want to mess with it at all.
