Elite Veteran Posts: 1079	Has anyone here had these allergy tests/panels run on their horse? Apparently they make a series of antigen shots based on the results and this is then able to "cure" or at least give the horse a much greater resistance to the things they are allergic to. I am at the end of my options with my gelding who has COPD and my vet thinks there is a good chance he will respond well and maybe continue to be rideable. When he can't breathe he can't eat or drink well and he's older and it's just a tough spot :(

We are on the final vials and will go to maintenance after we are finished with them. He got so sick last year and had a constant terrible cough even just standing in pasture, forget riding! This year no cough and he looks great. I would have no problem doing it again and wished I would have done it sooner instead of dumping money down the drain treating symptoms.

I have a feeling I too will wish I would have done something like this sooner as he is 22 and I worry it's too late. He is in tough shape right this minute, he as to work so hard to breathe it takes a toll. He has been having flare ups very frequently this year and the steroids I have been giving work well, but are less effective each time and it's just a bandaid. What will you have to do for maintenance?? How many shots were in your series and how frequently did you have to give them? My vet said something like 6 months of time to get them all in. Extreme Veteran Posts: 507 Location: Texas	I had my horse tested years ago from a lab in Arizona. He is allergic to many different things. He got two different vials and he gets a monthly shot. I really think I could quit them now but am afraid to. It literally saved his life!

Expert Posts: 2013 Location: Piedmont, OK	I have one that was tested and glad I did she is highly allergic to Penicillin and I would have never know if I had not done it. She is also allergic to every kind of fly, mosquitoes, and cockroaches. She is also allergic to Mollasses. But since she has started the shots it has helped tremendously with her allergies. We are on the last vial which will go thru November and then she will go on the maintenance dose. the testing itself was like $125 and then the medication for the shots was around $200. But last summer she was on several expensive allergy supplements and shots of dex which only helped a little. The allergy shots to me are less expensive than the supplements, and they work.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1079	I really appreciate these responses. I sure would like to get this horse running again because A. he loves it and B. I think keeping them working keeps them "young". I wouldn't even saddle him at this point but he ran his absolute BEST last summer and so I'm hopeful that this would work well enough to get him going again. He's been so good to me and so I owe it to him to try this.
