Location: Texas | I am in desperate need of help. My mare is a hot mess! Poor baby seems to be having a horrible time with her heat cycles she will lean up agains walls and at times even slams herself against them and last weekend really tore up her hip from doing it in a trailer. I feel like this mare hAs a ton of talent and could make a true 1d horse is we could get her moods and obvious physical issues in check. The vet has recommended an implant and have heard mixed reviews. I have tried mare magic, mare harmony and neither of those have worked. So next plan is implant. She was due to go to vet to rule out pain/lameness issues when she decided to go bizerk in the trailer. I am about ready to give up on this mare. Opinions please. |

| She sounds just like mine. 10 runners before the short go this year at the BBR Finals she starts acting like she is tying up which she has never done. Dr Robin was there and everything let to her hormones. I have dealt with this the whole time I have had her. I use Dr Hague at Oakridge and he has tried everything possible on her. Nothing has helped. She is not as hateful on Platinum CJ as other joint supplements I have used. I know of nothing in the platinum that would control this but I do notice a difference. Or it could be everyone tippy toes around her. Lol I was ready to give up on her but ended up just giving in to that this is how she is. She literally destroys things trailer, stall, ect. She things shes a pitbull. She bites and kicks (humans). You may look into some homeopathic therapy also. Kat gets chiro, massage, acupressure and bigeoil baths that really helps her. | Do you know what kind of implant? And how/where it's placed? Have you tried regumate or altrenogest? They shouldn't be given for extended periods of time and you have to give daily or weekly but they'll keep her from coming in heat if started at the correct point in her cycle. You could keep her on for a few months when you're competing more and then give her a little time off before you start up again. That would be my concern with a long acting implant....we see a lot of mares have reproductive issues from not being able to cycle normally from hormone therapies. |

Location: Texas | The implant is tiny, and goes in the neck. It's progesterone.
Eta, and I've used the implant on a maiden mare who got in foal via shipped semen the first try when I bred her.

Location: So. California | Have you done a culture/US on your mare? My mare was very similar in action and she had a uterine infection. Cleared that up and a totally different mare when in season. |

Location: NW Arkansas | I've never done hormone implants, but I know a lot of people that use Kathy Brown to get their mare's ovaries injected. She injected my mare once and it helped. I met her at Equine Medical Associates in Edmund, OK. I don't know if that would help your mare or not, but it's worth talking to her about it. I'd give you her number, but I can't find it- new cell phone and her number isn't on it. I bet someone on here has it! EMA may have it also.

We have a mare that sounds just like yours, but it isn't just when she is in heat (it is worse when she in heat though). I have been telling my SO's for a couple of years to go have her checked. She had a big cyst on her right ovary. We have had it ultrasounded 2 times now, going in for the 3rd this week and to see what our next step is. |

| my little mare is literally the devil when in heat. she would kick at anything is sight and not run as well. we got her implanted and it didn't do a darn thing… we later got her checked out by a vet and decided to spay her.. her ovaries had cysts all over them and it was making her act very bad because she was in pain. she is much better after getting spayed. |

Location: Online | That sounds exactly like my mare. I had her checked while in heat and they didn't find any cysts, everything looked good. The only thing was her uterous was extremely inflamed and engorged with blood. A few years ago I did the progesterone pellets in her chest. They helped, her heat cycle went from 8 days to 3 and she would only bang on the fence for 1 instead of 4. Her attitude was considerably better. This year I went with once a week progesterone shots. Same thing, shorter heat cycles, but she will still come in, but tolerable. They have really calmed her down too, she's not nearly as cranky. I think the shot works a little better than the pellets. The pellets start wear off after a few months and you can regulate the dosage better with the shot. I went from 1 1/2 cc down to 1 cc after the first couple of months.

Location: Conroe, TX 77304 | I have a mare that has been like that her whole life, she would bang the trailer while hauling so bad she would come out of the trailer soaking wet from banging soo much. I would have to tie the mare next to her head to make sure she did not reach under the slats and bit her, it was terrible.
Tried implants, marble, mare magic, finally put her on Regumate and she does not do it any more. Just wish I had done it years ago |

| Talked to Dr Kathy Brown when I was dealing with a second mare with theses kinds of issues. She injects the ovary acupuncture points, NOT the actual ovaries themselves.
As far as the implants go, they may work great......for awhile. In my experience, when they wear off, the problems come back much worse. Have dealt with two mares that I ended up spaying with severe pain issues from retained multiple follicles ( MSU and Perdue are insistent that they are not cysts). Nothing worked on either mare including progesterone shots, acupuncture, breeding attempts, herbals, Regumate up to double the normal dose, marbles.......ummmm, I'm sure that I leaving some things out.
Best thing that I did for both mares was spay them. they still act like mares and even cycle, but their pain is gone. |

| I just started one of my mares on altrenogest (1x/month shot) which was recommended on here in a previous post and so far (2 weeks in) she has never been better on the barrels. Before when she was cycling she had zero focus and acted like she was in lala land all the time. |
