I need help!  My 2 year old devloped a cough this spring, not horrible, no fever, no runny nose.  He seemed to get over it in a couple weeks, but as soon as I would ride more than a couple days in a row, it would return.  I would lay him off for a week or so, he would be fine, back to riding and it returns.  I took him to the vet a month ago, bloodwork was normal, lungs sounded good, they did the re-breathing deal.  We put him on a 2 week course of SMZ's and 10 days of bute to help with any imflammation.  He was laid off during this time.  I also started soaking his hay.  Seemed fine, started riding him again, and we are back to the coughing.  I do not want to have the allergy panels ran, as I feel there are expensive and really do not narrow anything down, they usually come back with about 50 things he "could" be allergic too.  Any ideas?

My 5 yr old had an occasional cough then it became very smokey at my house due to forest fires. She would cough till she dropped to her knees, dry cough, no nasal discharge, no temp, and I wasn't riding her. She would do this about 2-3 times a day.

Took her to the vet, he scoped her, her lungs were filled with crud/mucus, he took a sample, then began flushing the lungs so she could cough it up.

I have done this with one other horse, with success, for two years I had to keep him off of a round bale, after the two year mark, I never had another problem. With this guy I tried all the herbal remedies, the only thing that helped him was pineapple juice, someone on this forum told me about it. I used this daily in conjunction with ventolin and Flovent inhailers.

This could begin as a guttural pouch infection where it drains into the lungs. It may not be allergies

I went through the same thing and then some with my colt last year. Finally did a BAL came back as IAD due to allergies. Did the allergy panel and started on the injection series and totally new horse. I spent several thousand dollars treating the symptoms only to be right back at square one. JMO but I would do a BAL and the allergy tests and be done with it.

My gelding with a chronic cough was diagnosed with IAD. I steam his hay, and he has an inhaler for if he has a bad flare up. He's been laid off for a year due to other issues, and so far he seems to be doing pretty good coming back, I haven't had to give him any type of meds, I just keep steaming his hay.

Cheryl could you tell us more on pineapple juice to help with coughs.

I honestly can't remember what the mechanism is, but I do know that the one horse I used it on never coughed, nor did he have the mucus build up. I gave him 1/4 cup pineapple juice daily.

It was someone who visited BHW regularly that suggested I try it.

Pineapple juice contains bromelain it has anti-inflammatory properties that fight infections especially bacterial.
