svincent - 2014-07-30 3:27 PM First, make sure your hat is the actual proper size for your dome. Then.... I take a piece of duct tape and make an inside out loopy with it. Then I put that on the front of the inside of the hat, then put it on my head. It sticks better if you don't have a bunch of make up and lotion and stuff on your forehead. Also, make sure to not stick it to your eyebrows. Also, bobby pins into the sweatband.
How do I know if I have the proper size? Is that just a feeling thing and saying "Oh, a 6 1/2 fits better than a 6 3/4?"... I just tried different sizes on in the store and went with what wasn't too tight, but wasn't loose when I moved.
Also, does your hair get caught in the duct tape?  Just trying to see I'm picturing it right. Fold the tape to where the outter parts are the sticky side and let one sticky side grab to the hat and the other side to your face?Â
How do I get the bobby pins attached to my hair? I see how they do it on crows, but the head of hair is exposed... My hat doesn't have a sweatband... just a leather band at the bottom and the opening is at the top... I guess it would make sense if it had a sweatband and the opening was at the bottom.

I bought my hat at a hat store, and they wiggled them around on my head and measured and then shaped it a bit (like somebody else said).
The duct tape part, you are picturing it right. To keep your hair out of the tape, I kind of lean back a touch when I put it on (like if I were rinsing out shampoo). The worst I've done is get my eyebrows. Lol.
All the other suggestions on here are great too, I think a lot depends on your head shape/size as to what works. Lol |

| I have this same problem, I have found that padding the hat where it isnt tight.. like the sides.. with a napkin or paper towel in the band helps and just shove the back down.. Like instead of it being evenly on my head before I run I pull it way low in the back... bobby pin method works too depending on the band in your hat |

| I dropped $200 on a new hat at Youth World. I bought one with an open crown from Larry Mahan; had it shaped how I wanted, then the guy put foam inserts all along the inside until it fit properly. Then when I ran I put double sided ductape on my forehead...that sucker didn't go anywhere through 6 runs!! Get an open crown so you can shape it to your head and make sure it goes far enough down onto your head so its less apt to come off. |

I tried the folding down the back trick last night and voilently shook my head and it didn't go anywhere!! I have still armed my overnight bag with hairspray and bobby pins (don't think I can pin my hat, but just incase!) and about to pick up some toupee/duct tape just in case! |

I tried the folding down the back trick last night and voilently shook my head and it didn't go anywhere!! Â I have still armed my overnight bag with hairspray and bobby pins (don't think I can pin my hat, but just incase!) and about to pick up some toupee/duct tape just in case!
I fold my had band down in the back and hairspray the forehead with that aquanet freeze spray and it works like a charm. don't leave your hairspray in the trailer though the hairspray will lose its stick if it's not kept at room temp. I've never lost it that way, just make sure you have fresh skin on your forehead, no lotion or makeup. that way when you take it off you don't have stickies all over your face and adhesive stuff.
I'd rather lose my hat then bobby pin it to my head, i tried it and it hurt so flipping bad when getting my hair out of the pins my scalp bled. NO THANK YOU.
Someone here gave me those super tips and I am SO grateful for it! |

Found this out the hard way. Very seldom where a hat, went to NBHA State Finals and it was dress code. After losing 45 pounds, my hat didnt fit...figured this out about 30 minutes before my run LOL! |

| Buy a hat that fits, and spend some money on a quality stampede string. I usually buy at NRS (David's) and have them attach the string to the hat. A stampede string is disaster with a loose fitting hat though. I have seen hats fall down over the face of contestants and blind them during a run. I usually have a headache after my run because of hat tightness. |

Seriously. Keep your head down as much as possible during a run. I've only had mine fall off when I looked up at the timer. Lol
I fold the back of the band down & that usually does the trick. I wait until the last second to do it too so it doesn't get looser as it sits on my head

| Ok here is one of the most valuable pieces of information I have ever learned:
Some things you don't skimp on. Buying a good quality hat is one of those. (Along with a good quality saddle and a good quality pair of boots!) Spend the money and get the best quality hat you can possibly afford. I had a 20X Black Gold that my husband bought for me when we got married 20 years ago. Unfortunately, I set it on the trailer fender after I ran one night, didn't see it, and drove away and lost it. (Which was another valuable lesson learned - don't set stuff on the trailer fender  )
A good quality felt hat will shape to your head (and for lack of a better word, "suck" down on your head) when you pull it down. Yes, they are expensive but you can also take them to a hatter and they will re-block and clean them and they will come back good as new. Mine lasted for 20 years and would have lasted longer had I taken better care of it.

Some of the things Ive seen said on this thread just made me think "No wonder these girls hate wearing their hats!" YIKES!!!
Just fold the back hat liner down and pull your hat on. You can cut the liner that folds down at the half way point on both sides to make it easier if you wish.Just the headband part of the hat liner. Your hat will stay on, and you dont need any crap stuffed into the liner nor sticky stuff to make your life miserable while wearing your hat. lol

I always had issues with keeping my hats on, but I found one that fits, and it stays put!! Doesn't have to be too expensive, but make sure it fits like a glove. And I pull it over my ears right before I run.

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I flip the inner hat band down in back when I run... Makes it fit tight and stays in place. then you can flip it back up and have a comfy hat and no headache while wearing it all day... |
