Location: My own little world :) | Hello all! I would like to get familiarized with how the whole futurity, derby, then open aspects of barrel racing work. As I understand it you futurity colts as 4 and/or 5 year olds, then derby as 5 and/or 6 year olds, then the open is all after that.
Can a horse be a derby horse if they were not in futurities?
From a monetary perspective where is there the most money to be had?
Are derby horses and open horses as impressive as futurity colts in the barrel racing world?
Im sure I will come up with more questions but this is what I have so far! Thanks!

Location: Texas | Futurity has the most money hands down. There are slot races which are races within a futurity for a limited number of horses at a higher entry fee $25,000-$200,000 prizes. Open barrel races can have good payouts but usually nothing like a futurity. I think the most money is made by having a good futurity year and then start seasoning at rodeos the derby year and sell from there. |

| Also don't forget about 3 year old Juvenile futurity! Futurity horses you get one year to futurity (usually 4 or 5yr old year) after that is Derby where you get 2 years after the futurity year, so if you had a 5yr old futurity horse you could derby as a 6 & 7yr old. After that is just open.
You can derby a horse that was not in futurities, just less common. Your horse needs to be eligible for them (some are breeder only) and some are sanctioned part of a futurity/derby associated and you would need to nominate your horse.
Most money by far is in the Futurities, you can still make quite a bit in the opens but not as much.
Derby and open horses are just as impressive if they can win same as a futurity colt. |

Location: My own little world :) | Thank you for your response I really appreciate it! So as an open horse is it better to run at just barrel events or go on as a pro rodeo horse? Or do many people do both? Thanks! |

| If you have a horse that is capable of drawing checks then WPRA rodeos pay a lot more than the D races. But a lot of top D horses are not rodeo horses and a lot of winning rodeo horses place in the 2D at D races. Even Lisa Lockhart has said that Louie is a winning NFR horse that places in the 2D lol! |

Wow that is really interesting that NFR horses often don't place in the 1D. Thank you for the information. |
