So long story short, my super nice 1D mare got on a break 2 years ago because she got super hot and I figured the best thing would be for her to get time off. A year after, she was still crazy, so I bred her. Well, her foal is now four months old and it's getting close to the time where I wanna start riding her again/getting her legged up to run again.

I've been riding her a little here and there these past few weeks, and she is really hard in the mouth, it's so aggravating. She also hardly walks, it's generally more of a prance. What do y'all do to get your horse softer and more supple? Any tips would be awesome!!!

What seems to work well with mine is lateral flexion. Just flex her head side to side and hopefully she will start to relax, lower her head and help with vertical flexion as well. Another thing I do is keep them busy in small circles..just make her work. Hope this helps with your mare.

I agree with the lateral and small circles. I don't really get along with hot horses because I'm pretty hot tempered myself and get really nervous before a run so I don't need to be making a horse nuts but I have rode a few in the past and the way I managed was just riding if we weren't going the speed I wanted we would do small-ish circles like 10ft or so until the horse started to relax then I would drop my hand and let the horse walk off straight and as soon as the horse started going faster than I would like we would do the circles again to the other direction. Not jerking or pulling just basically if you want to be a turd your gonna do it in a 10ft circle. I had to have a beer or two before riding these horses LOL I would get so flustered because it does take FOREVER for some of them to "get it"

Also for the hard mouthed stuff I bit my horses up and leave then in the arena and babysit from the shade. Let her pull on herself for a while. No need for you to the be the bad guy.

He lateral flexion is great, if a horse can't give one side, they diffently can't do both (vertical)

I would do a bit of looking into things though. If she started to unravel before that issue could likely still be there.
Have her teeth been done at all with all her time off?
I personally wont ride a mare that's foal until the cryo / body woker goes over them, things streach and change to allow for the birth of a baby, espicaly the hip area.

Best of luck hope she comes back good for you!

Thank yall for the help! Shes definitely stiff in her lateral flexion. Ill be working with her on that on the ground for a while, until i get the vet to look her over real well when the foal is weaned. Until then, we will be doing light riding and ground work cause shes a fatty.

But yes she got her teeth done about a month ago! Otherwise she's just generally a wish and a complete mystery in the vets office. We tried everything before we gave her her break. But once the foal is weaned shes going to be picked over with a fine toothed comb!!

Her main thing before i gave her a break was rearing before a run/seeing an alleyway. She's definitely the hottest horse i've ridden and the smartest! She knew that she would freak me out if she reared her way over to the concrete and then rear up there. But she has an all business attitude and definitely is amazing in the barrel pen. Even though she is a brat, she has a forever home at my house (:
