Location: North Dakota | I have a 3-year-old dark grey horse. He does have some red hairs mixed in his coat. But it's REALLY evident where my saddle goes. You can even see the perfect outline of the cinch and off-billet!
It's not an huge deal, as I don't show big or anything that requires him to look perfect, but is there any supplement I can give him (or anything I can do) to prevent him from getting "color marks" where the saddle goes? I've heard of Black as Knight, and I guess they make a Silver-Horse-Supplement ... would that help? Anyone tried it?
He is kept on pasture 24/7 .... and I'm not changing that.  It's good and natural for him to graze all day, even if he is carrying a couple extra pounds. I do realize the sun bleaching has a lot to do with it. I wonder what really makes him more red where the saddle goes? Maybe he gets sweaty, and then when it dries, it bleaches the hair more in the sun?????

Location: NM | Yep it's the sweating. Sweat in the sun will bleach one faster than sun alone. Hose him off of sponge him off when you are done riding. Probably won't help you for this year but should help for next year. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Do you rinse him off after you finished riding? If not the sweat will bleached out, and if you do rinse then, what type of pad and cinch do you use? |

Location: Way up North | My gray colt does the same thing. He gets rinsed everytime he gets worked and we wears a fly sheet. We think his is because he has a slight allergy to wool and my pad is wool . |

Location: Wisconsin | Same thing happens with my black and white paint... It's from the sweat. Rinse off after you ride, won't change anything this year, but next year the coat won't fade. |

I use a 5 Star pad and Professional's Choice VenTech cinch.

Good choice on pad and cinch  . The reason I was asking I know for a fact a neoprene cinch and pad will do this, there is so much heat under these. The sweat and salt is really hard on horses hair. |
