| So I need some help with my colt. He a very docile, sweet colt. Rarelyyy acts up, and learns quickly. He knows all the basics expect for one thing. Lunging. This child is just too lazy I think! He'll walk both directions rather fine (besides stopping, and trying to eat grass.) But if you ask him to trot forget it. He becomes extremely stubborn, and will trot for a few feet, then he will pull away, and try to rear. You can keep a lunge line behind him, kiss, and even tap him with the lunge line, but he just doesn't wanna go! He goes for a few seconds then decides to pull away. Lunging for me is something vital that my horses need to know. So can anyone give me some this for him? I'm sorta at a disadvantage because, I don't have a round pen, or small fenced in area. But, if anyone has any advice I would love it! Please no criticism or rude comments. Thanks! |

Location: Texas | I think some kind of round pen would make a big difference. Maybe get some of those step on post for electric fences and some of the electric fence tape. Hopefully he won't try to run thru it, even if it is not connected to power. |

Location: At A Barrel Race! | I am in your position and going to be going to pick up a colt that needs training in a week or so. I have found the Stacy Westfall diaries on youtube are very very helpful. She gets them to lunge in about 3 to 4 days? I can't recall, it's been awhile since I watched them!
I am going to base my lessons with this colt all around her diaries. I would suggest you check them out! :) |

Location: where ever my L/Q trl is parked | It would be easier to get him to lunge if you had a round pen, if not do you know someone that has you could use. I've always started one out on a 8' lead having them walk around me while I hold a long buggy whip just behind the rump to incourage them to keep moving. Then I have them trot around, but never lope. Lopeing is for a round pen. I've never had any problem teaching one to lunge with a pen and also free lungeing is easier to teach them. |

| I never let one walk on a lunge line for this reason... If you have a friend that can have a lunge whip And have them push him around the lung line so you can control him... That's what I would do...Mine know from day one a line means play time buck run whatever but no walking... I hand walk the. If they need it.. |

Location: Oklahoma | First off... I use a stud chain over the nose when lunging. Second, I do all 3 gaits on the lunge, but very little walking. I also have a whip long enough to pop them in the butt if need be. I've had a couple rear and try to take off flying backwards. I encourage them to keep going back until they realize it's easier to do things my way. Clinton Anderson has some good methods. I don't have a round pen right now either, but all mine will lunge with respect. |
