Location: Iowa | Hey everyone, I would like to hear everyone's favorite mouth piece and why! I am just looking at ordering some new bits from L&W and would love some futher explanintion of how different mouth pieces effect the horses differently. Such as lifters verse gags (Ex: James vereses Chervi Bits)....dog bone, port, square, smooth or twisted wire two piece (which I would love to hear about!) Thanks!

Dogbone and Chain
Ditto! I love chain mouths on soft-mouthed horses and the dog bone for those that need a little more. |

| The bits that I ride in the most are a tear drop shank with a dog bone mouth, and a chain mouth with a shank that has a little gag (I'm not a bit guru so that's the best way I can explain them!). I also have a short shank Tender Touch with a dog bone mouth and a short shank with a lifesaver mouth. All of these bits except the Tender Touch are from Dutton.
I like the dog bone because I feel like it sits better in their mouth and it allows for more flex. Even the ring snaffle I start my colts in has a dog bone mouth.
I typically start in the teardrop shanked bit and if they like it and work in it I keep that on them. If they don't like it or aren't responding well to it I'll try one of the others. |

Location: Iowa | Perfect thanks guys! I just have so many two pieced bits that I should really invest in something more! Do you prefer more of a slight gag or a fix mouth piece? Most of mine are fixed lifters! |

| I love chain mouth pieces and almost exclusively buy that mouthpiece. However as for the amount of gag, I like to have a bit of a variety, some with more gag, some with less, others fixed. You may need to switch bits from time to time or use one to tune them up and something may work better than another. |

| I've found most of my horses don't want a 2 piece. I think it doesn't lie nicely across their mouth, instead cracker jacks in the middle and hits the roof.
They want something broken twice (dogbone) or with a little more security like the Billy Allen mouthpieces. http://tombalding.com/index.php/catalog-mouthpieces (piece BB)
It's to the point now that on several of my mares, if I put a regular broken snaffle in them, they let me know their displeasure. |
